Indeed, Facebook recently suspended its dabbling in facial recognition in Europe in response to government reservations about the company’s biometric database on European citizens.

European governments had a problem with biometric databases, but our doesn't? What's wrong with that? I would have thought EU would have been okay with this and the US against it.

I think that's part of the reason we haven't seen these systems, which have been in the works for a while: they are expensive; and only really useful in urban environments; and depend on rapid response times.
