....with a compound bow. Actually, to quote the article, a "high-powered bow-and-arrow."

It goes on to say that:
He had smuggled the compound bow -- a type much more powerful and effective for hunting than a simple, wooden bow -- onto campus beneath a blanket, Walsh said.
So, take away guns and people will still find ways to kill each other. He also brought a couple of knives, he used one to stab himself first.. then his father. This whole story is just strange.

Your best option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
When those fail, aim for center mass.
