What is your preferred 12 gauge home defense ammo?

Put me down for the Federal Premium flight control 00 buck. Packs a wallop and has a nice tight pattern but it definitely puts to bed the myth that you don't have to aim a shotgun. Once I get my carbine sighted in that may end up replacing my 12 ga for home defense duty, we'll see.

Agreed....carlson1 wrote:Believe what you want. You have two types of burglars. Those who do not want confrontation (the professional) and those who do want confrontation (the ones who will hurt you). Racking a shotgun will not work against those who want confrontation. I am not going to take time to rack my shot gun, aiming, safety off, and shooting. I am aiming, turning off safety, and pulling trigger.
I have met very few suspects I ever arrested that was intimidated by a rack of a shotgun, because more than the majority was armed.
To much movie watching for racking a round runs the bad guy off.

Anything from #4 buckshot- 000 buck from a 12 or 20 gauge at close range in your home is pretty much as close as your going to get to a one shot stop. Some run #4 buck because of less penetration but from most of the tests I have seen it still penetrates an average of 12 inches. Basically 12-20 inches is the range for most buckshot average penetration. I really don't think you could go wrong with any of them but I will say that the Federal Personal defense loads have a nice controlled and uniform spread if you want the best. My advice unless you are worried about too much penetration is the cheapest American made 00 buck you can find and cycles in your shotgun. Rem, win, fed. Within 20 feet all are bad news for those on the receiving end!

Winchester, Remington and S&B make #1 buck. I have only shot the Winchester and I had to buy it online. It is supposed to be the most buck to hull ratio. #1,0,00,000. BG isn't going to know the difference.I've never seen #1 anywhere either.

I use Winchester 00 Buckshot. I don't work the action either as the gun is already loaded. To me that like hollering out "Hey! I'm over here and armed so just get ready to shoot at me."
My posts on this website are worth every cent you paid me for them.

Here's some #1 buck Federal FC-1321B http://www.gtdist.com/ProductDetail.asp ... FC-LE1321B" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Never seen this in the store, but apparently they have it or can get it
GTs has the 00 buck listed generically (photo is not correct ammo)
http://www.gtdist.com/ProductDetail.asp ... CALSHOTGUN" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
But here is the correct part # LE-132-00 from Ammo To Go (price is WAY high compared to what I've paid in store at GTs)

The first time I bought the LE rounds at GT's I had to show my police ID.A-R wrote:Here's some #1 buck Federal FC-1321B http://www.gtdist.com/ProductDetail.asp ... FC-LE1321B" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Wondering if that's a new thing coinciding with panic buying? I've always been able to buy it previously, no TCLEOSE no nuthin.texanjoker wrote:The first time I bought the LE rounds at GT's I had to show my police ID.A-R wrote:Here's some #1 buck Federal FC-1321B http://www.gtdist.com/ProductDetail.asp ... Good point, I was under mistaken impression that the Federal Premium brand with same flight-control wad was not low-recoil, but based on stated muzzle velocity seems to be the same loadSRO1911 wrote:LE only marked ammunition is exactly the same as non-LE marked ammunition, including the ranger T and 50rd hydrashock that pops up every so often. The reasoning behind the LE marking is TAX related - and has nothing to do with civilian ownership... provided sales tax was paid.

edited to add: does cost more though, based on quick Google glance

No this was a couple years ago when I first bought some of those low recoil LE rounds.A-R wrote:Wondering if that's a new thing coinciding with panic buying? I bought from GT Distributors in Austin, the Federal No.1's for $2.99 a 5 pack this fall. They shipped it to California!
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.
Re: What is your preferred 12 gauge home defense ammo?
I thought I might top off my supply of the Federal No. 1 buck ammo. GT told me just now they are backordered 30,000 rounds of the stuff, and no idea when they will catch up.

#4 Buckshot, Hornady Superformance (std barrel) or Hornady 300gr SST Sabot Slug (rifled barrel)
The second one has quite the kick.
