Commanders, chaplains and health professionals are now specifically authorized to ask troops they think are at risk for hurting themselves or others about privately owned firearms.
The authorization is part of the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, which contains provisions dealing with numerous new or amended policies concerning, among other things, sexual assault, abortion, detainee operations and suicide.
The measure dealing with privately owned firearms clarifies a provision -- backed by the National Rifle Association -- in the 2011 Defense Authorization Act that prohibited collecting information from troops about their firearms. Some commanders and mental health professionals were concerned that it forbade inquiries about firearms, the most common and by far the most lethal method used by servicemembers to take their own lives.

I thought Obama wanted to get rid of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell".

UCMJ would cover the "must tell" part.

Re: Service Members must disclose private firearms
UCMJ cannot force a service person from disclosing if they have or have not a firearm. if they answer NO, its up to the nis(ncis) to prove you have one, then you could be in hot water...but most are smart and anything that could be perceived as a hindrance is in the spouses name
this is SOOOOOOO old its not even funny.
commanders have had the right to inquire about anything in a service persons property if its on the reservation or the commands property
and for as long as I can remember if they or the chain of command felt you may have mental issues they can intervene. NOT TAKE private property unless its on the reservation PERIOD. If they want private property off the reservation it must be through legal channels of the local law enforcement.
if they feel your unstable they can restrict you to the reservation or a point of medical care or invention. but NOT seize your private property without due process of local authority. Its not like in the 80's when we could go to your private residence and order you to open your doors
this release of new info as part of the 2013 budget deal is just to get folks nervous by re-iterating existing rules of engagement.
this is all liberal glory gloating trying to make somebody feel better. you know pelosi said all vets and active duty are terrorist in the waiting.
I can imagine being in the co's office and asking a young lad if he/she has firearms and how dangerous they can be....right after we just re-qualified the whole squad on the 9mm, m60 and m14 getting ready to deploy for the 25th time in 5 years to the stan sand box
give me a freaking break.
its ok to kill our enemy and be proficient...but not have one at home...
sure didnt stop the shrink(major husuan) from killing people at ft hood did it.
