Mossberg 500
Mossberg 500
I recently purchased a Mossberg 500 Defender it came with a pistol grip and heat shield. I want to add a simple stock to it, a sling, a light and something to hold extra ammo. Keeping budget in mind, what would you recommend and where would I find it?

Re: Mossberg 500
Are you wanting to keep the pistol grip on it or just put a regular stock on?

Re: Mossberg 500
I bought one of the side saddles and after a long day of heavy use, it would make my action tight. I screwed it into the buttstock and it is much better now.

Re: Mossberg 500
I bought the Knoxx recoil-reducing AR style stock for mine. The only issue is the safety position and the pump release are a little awkward. The Remington's safety and pump release are in much better positions for the pistol grip + stock setup. If you leave a round chambered, the pump release won't be an issue.Gungirl wrote:I want to keep the postal grip on and just add the stock.
(I also have an 870 Express hunting shotgun, and I do prefer the 500 to the 870 Express. The action is MUCH smoother and I like the open loading area.)
I added the sidesaddle and love it, too.

That is what I ended up going with. Made it much more enjoyable to shoot.fickman wrote: I bought the Knoxx recoil-reducing AR style stock for mine. The only issue is the safety position and the pump release are a little awkward. .

Re: Mossberg 500
I am still confused, sorry I am new to all this.
Do these recommended stocks work with the existing pistol grip? Or do I need to get a stock/ pistol grip combo to put on it? I am looking for a solid stock, that is not too heavy.
All my Internet searching seems to show the stock and pistol grip as the only option, this seems wasteful to me since I already have the pistol grip.

Gungirl, The pistol grip that is on your Mossberg is just a pistol grip. A stock with the pistol grip and a buttstock is a complete unit. I have a speedfeed stock on my 1100 and I really like the fact I have 4 extra shells stored in the stock itself. I have a Mossberg pump with a standard stock and a sidesaddle. The tang mounted safety of the Mossberg makes a pistolgrip style stock kind of awkward.
There are a lot of options for a light one of the simplest is this Barrel clamp combined with a decent quality flashlight with a momentary tailcap switch.

Re: Mossberg 500
You're current pistol grip cannot be combined with a stock. Most aftermarket parts will come with the required tool to remove the piece it is replacing.
I load 2 3/4" #4 buckshot in mine with 2 3/4" slugs on the sidesaddle.
