So i was for some reason paying attention to the new I phone 5 commercial
the guy was dreaming about the venus twins playing ping pong
and the voice over announced it was his dream and he didn't want to be disturbed or awakened, I cant remember which.
and the ad moved to the screen to select a not disturb mode......


so i looked at my old LG non smart phone, and it has the same feature....its called an "OFF" button




seriously are we really that dumb that apple thinks we need an I phone 5 to set a no ring mode????

if i don't want to hear my phone its set to vibrate or OFF, didnt cost me a dime

Actually you can select who disturbs you and who doesn't - similar to what my grandmother would say my grandfather had, selective hearing.

It's actually a great feature. Yes, I can put it to silent mode but if there is an emergency I would like a famil member be ale to reach me. That's what this does. When you put it in silent mode, it allows only those people you choose to ring while everyone else it is silent.

My default ring tone is silence. I also use Extreme Call Blocker that dismisses calls and SMS messages from those not on my contact list.

Vibrate is still a disturbance and off means that you won't be able to tell who may have tried to call you which may be important to some folks.

The other point being missed is that, besides the selective "give this person the ability to ring my chimes", you can also set up time limits for the quiet mode.

Yeah... go ahead and turn your phone off. just remember to turn it back on when you're done. What's that, you forgot? That's my the selective "do not disturb" is cool - you don't have to remember to turn it off.

I was in Heb grocery store yesterday and counted 11 different people earnestly giving their cell phone calls their all.

They were obliviously pushing a shopping cart with one hand while using the other to firmly mash their phones into their ears. What on earth is going on? Can't they stop their obsession long enough to grocery shop?

It reminded of an episode on tv where an increasing population of the cast were unable to stop playing an electronic game which was played with a small headset device projecting a small beam directly into one eye. As time passed, more and more of the cast were playing. Once started they couldn't stop. Eventually, with the exception of one member they were all hooked. Then disaster struck. The non-playing member saved them all...

The show was a cautionary tale broadcast a number of years ago.

Now, it's coming true with cell phone use.

I now see a massive increase in the use of cell phones in public in just this past year. There are people bizarre enough to blather loudly on cell phones in public restrooms even.

Good grief, when will people begin to realize their becoming pod people?

I have an iPhone 5... that feature is actually amazing!

In the interest of full disclosure, I am one of "those people." My phone is an extension of my hand... I use it for everything. I am that person who forgets their cell phone on a trip to Walmart, and turns around to get it. Aside from standard text messaging/phone calls, I spend a fair amount of time fielding emails, browsing FB, news, or whatever else. Shopping lists, to-do lists, calendars, weather, banking, TexasCHLForum'ing, etc.-- it's all done through my phone.

I'm fully aware that my life revolves around a $600 computer. I agree that sometimes I wish I could throw my phone in a lake... it can get annoying. Still, my phone is probably the most frequently used/most convenient/most useful thing I have on my person--second only to a handgun of some flavor. It has simplified my life.

I agree that cell phones have taken over. There is a reason for it--they convenience everything. If you use your smart phone to it's full potential (more than texting and calling someone), it's easy to realize why everyone is so crazy about them. That said, I abhor people who text & drive... or talk on the phone and drive...or stand in a line at the store on their phone. Particularly driving, This is when I most often use my do-not-disturb function. The only person who gets through when i'm driving is my wife..

Technology is what you make of it. I'm browsing the forum right now with the iPad Santa brought me for Christmas while monitoring the small one's bath time.
Since Christmas, I have used it to stay in touch via email or text, sync my work and home calendars, play music wherever I can get a wifi signal, take notes during discipleship class, follow along with the Bible in church on uversion (although I used kindle before this, and a pulp Bible before that), read the Bible while away from home, get on Facebook, use as a timer for small one's toilet training, provide toddler entertainment for successful toileting for said small one, track personal medical data, teach math concepts to my students, and play games... And I'm still learning what it can do.
Don't knock it 'til you've tried it!

I get what he is saying. A small device holds his most used data and utility functions.
