Son's First Shot of 223/5.56

Post by RX8er »

I took my 11 y/o to the range today to shoot the AR. It was his first time to shoot the AR style rifle. As expected, he could only shoot twice before the weight of the barrel got too much. We then moved him to a bench rest and he did pretty good.

Very good. What did he think of the recoil and sound? My daughter hasn't fired mine yet. She'll stick to her M&P15-22 for now.

His words.. "it was loud and kinda freaked me"

I shot a couple so he could get used to the crack. After he shot 10 or so, he started getting comfortable. He's still wanting to close his eyes in anticipation. He didn't even notice the transition from 223 to 5.56.

She loves it! She would shoot it all day long if I loaded the mags for her. She doesn't like that part. I put a little Sightmark RDS on it and she likes that too. The controls are all the same as my M4, so when she's ready to move up she'll already know how to use it.

That's great.

The_Busy_Mom is looking at the Sightmark RDS for her S&W Model 22A for her NRA instructors class.

This is the one I put on hers. I think I got it for $45 or $50 from one of the guys here.

I shoot my AR with a mixture of .223 and 5.56. I've never noticed a difference. How can you tell the difference?

My 11 yr old has been shooting for a couple of years - has his own .243 for deer hunting. I took him out to a friends property where we were meeting a group of people for some plinking.
My son stole the show. Put up some 12 oz plastic bottles and handed him his Ruger SR22. At 50 ft he shredded the bottle. I then handed him the 10/22 with a red dot scope and he was popping bottles up in he air with the first shot and hitting it again with the second shot before the bottle would hit the ground.
Then came the AR with the lucid HD7 sight. There wasn't a bench of any kind where we were shooting and my son is on the small side so the rifle is a little heavy for him. To compensate, he got into a squatting position that allowed him to rest the fore grip on his knee (I wouldn't even dream of trying this). He then proceeded to obliterate the bullseye from 75 yds.
At this point everyone was more interested in watching than shooting (how many grown men want to be out shot by an 11 year old). It will cost me dearly to replace the ammo but the look on everyone's faces (especially my sons) was priceless.
Life is tough, but it's tougher when you're stupid.

I love this picture. It brings back fond memories of shooting with my dad when I was growing up. Never shot an AR with him, but definitely put more than my fair share of holes in beer bottles off the side of the Nueces River with a pistol and rifle. Your daughter will cherish these memories forever. I know I do.
