FireArm Policy
What do you guys think would be a good way to go about looking for my job's firearm policy.
I work around a big flippin' magnet (1.5T), so it's not like I could carry regardless, but I just wanna know what they think.
go to HR and ask them for what? I don't exactly wanna go to my supe and say, "Hey, ya'll mind if I'm packin' my Heater up in hurr?"

Re: FireArm Policy
If it's an official policy, it should show up in your employee handbook. Most of 'em contain some verbiage along the lines of "All weapons are strictly prohibitted."pbandjelly wrote:What do you guys think would be a good way to go about looking for my job's firearm policy.

No self-defense for YOU!
Re: FireArm Policy
Dont really want to ask a direct questions casue before you nkow it there will be posting everywhere. Just go though all the information they give you when you are hired. If you can find no mention of it and the building is not post 30.06 then you will be good to go. Just my 2 cents. But since Im technically not CHL holder yet then I might not know what I'm talking about either.pbandjelly wrote:What do you guys think would be a good way to go about looking for my job's firearm policy.

I had the same dilemma when I got my CHL. I had to re-read the employee manual and see if I could find anything prohibiting handguns. I didn't find anything.
If this was anything else, I'd follow-up with HR just to be sure, but I'm not going to in this case. If I happen to "get busted" for whatever reason here at work, I'll just deal with it then by telling management that I didn't see any signs and was not notified in writing or verbally that it was illegal.
I told my boss after I took the CHL class that I would probably just keep the gun in the truck, and he nodded and said, "Well, yeah", with the hidden meaning of "Well, of course...why would you carry it in here?". We left it at that, but that conversation was before I gleaned the good advice from this forum that I should keep my big mouth shut about it, especially at work.

some nutjob started shootin' up our ER!
well, we have security (un-armed) and AN armed Sheriff's deputy in the ER. still, would hate to be "the first"

good pun, by the way.
okay, here's this flippin' place's "Weapons" policy.
tell me whatchya'll think.
I. POLICY:
It is the policy of this facility to provide a safe, healthy and efficient working environment for employees, patients, and visitors, which is free of violence, threatening behavior and harassment.
II. PROCEDURE:
1. Rules
1.1 All applicants, prospective employees, and/or employees of this facility are prohibited from using or possessing a weapon of any kind, concealed or otherwise, at any time while on the premises of the Facility and/or while engaging and conducting business on behalf of the Facility.
1.2 “Weapon means any device or object capable of causing serious bodily injury or death to another person, including, but not limited to handguns, shotguns, rifles, automatics, semi-automatics or other firearms, “stun guns and/or knives, blades longer than 3 in length. “Weapons do not include mace, pepper spray or other similar devices intended to temporarily disable a person, or pocket knives with blades 3 in length or less. In general, any article used as a weapon against another individual may be considered a weapon.
1.3 This policy applies at all times to applicants, volunteers, prospective employees and/or employees of the facility on the premises of the facility, including, but not limited to: before, during and after normal working hours, weekends, holidays and while visiting the Facility’s premises and not on duty and/or as a customer. It also applies to at all times when employees are engaged in conducting business on behalf of the Facility whether such employees are on or off premises.
2. Searches
2.1 When there is a reason to believe that an employee is in possession of a weapon, the Facility reserves the right to conduct a search as a condition of continued employment.
2.2 Searches include, but not limited to: the person and/or property, clothing, personal belongings, handbags, purses, brief cases, backpacks, tool boxes, lockers and vehicles (whether personal or company-owned).
3. Enforcement
3.1 Any employee who violates any part of the Facility’s weapons policy may be subject to disciplinary action up to, and including, involuntary termination.
3.2 Any employee who refuses, obstructs or prevents a search undertaken pursuant to this Policy is subject to disciplinary action up to and including discharge.
3.3 Appropriate law enforcement officials may be notified if there is any violation of this Policy.
Ok, you can lose your job if you are carrying. But the wording used is not 30.06 compliant, so you couldn't be convicted of violating that statute. It also sounds like they think you can't have a weapon in your car (since they reserve the right to search your vehicle), and you told your supervisor that you have (or at least had) a firearm in your vehicle. That could come back to bite you, career-wise, if someone wants to make an example of you. Again, it is not illegal, but looks to be in violation of company policy.
IMHO, of course.
IMHO, of course.
Remember, in a life-or-death situation, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

THIS was the part that I was concerned about. How on god's green earth can they require a search of a vehicle that is on an open-to-the-public parking lot.barres wrote:It also sounds like they think you can't have a weapon in your car (since they reserve the right to search your vehicle),
'specially without a warrant.

I understand full well that they can give anyone the boot for anything, but come on. really? and what about the State Bill that was trying to get passed. I forget the number.
I fully understand that. Wish I'da known a flippin' year ago.barres wrote:and you told your supervisor that you have (or at least had) a firearm in your vehicle. That could come back to bite you, career-wise,
The only SuperVisor that knows is my direct one, and she pretty much only has control over the schedule.
The Director, I have not told, but may know, due to the grapevine.
ah, well.
