Just got a Win 94ae... any suggestions? Help needed.

Post by Texasrpbrock »

Fellas, I just bought a very lightly used Winchester 94ae that was made in 1992. It has the "Lawyer" safety cross bar on the top. It doesn't bother me and I wish it was a pre '64 but for the price and the condition, I couldn't pass it up. I've never owned a 94 and I havent even had a chance to shoot it yet.

So my questions are: is there anything I should upgrade internally or is the 1992 model 94 good to go out of the box. The trigger pull is a little heavy for my taste and I'm thinking it can be smoothed out to around 3 lbs.

Other than possibly attaching a Limbsaver and a little trigger work, I have no clue what to do to increase it's longevity, accuracy and make it a solid shooter. I don't have any plans to scope it. Probably going to be used as a coyote and pig control rifle.

If anyone has any other suggestions, tips or thoughts please let me know.
Thanks for your help! I appreciate all of the knowledge I've learned from you guys.

Pointed Bullet Cartridges for Lever Rifles with tube magazines

I don't have a lever rifle, and I've never fired this ammo, but it is supposed to give the lever rifle shooter the advantage of greater range and flatter shooting of a pointed bullet out to 400 yards (claimed), without the danger of igniting cartridges in the magazine tube under recoil.

I've read about Hornady's LEVERaction ammo and I'm definitely going to give it a try. Right know I've got a few boxes of Federal ammo (Deer Thugs) that I picked up at Wally World. 3 box limit.... You know the drill. But if I can get my hands on the Hornady I'll see how it runs. The big thing is IF I CAN GET A HOLD OF IT.... Thanks for the ammo suggestion. I think this is going to be a fun shooter and maybe I can take a deer with it down the line.

I kept the iron sights on mine too. It came with a peep sight, but it's bulky on what is an otherwise tiny rifle. I bought a bunch of leather, some leather lace, and Latigo and made kind of like a gun sock carrier with the leather, then I made a butt cover. Stuff like that is fun and easy to do on 94s.

Yep, I'm really hoping I can find or make a leather scabbard for it. I plan to use the iron sights. I noticed there are some peep sights out their but I'm going to keep it stock. I'm hoping I can find a top ejector (pre 64) one of these days when moneys not so tight. Put I'm thinking this one will make a good, reliable working rifle. I have no idea if it kicks or If I need a recoil pad. Guess ill find out soon.

Here is a website with a lot of custom upgrades for lever rifles. They are pretty expensive, but they've got MY attention, and I'm not particularly a lever rifle guy: http://www.grizzlycustom.com/packages_c ... rifle.html

Here's their page on custom sights: http://www.grizzlycustom.com/custom_lev ... tions.html. Of course, if your Winchester is top ejecting, these won't work for you.

I have a 94 Trapper in .38/.357 Mag. I replaced the sights with XS, and added a plate for a scope attach, which I sometimes fit with a red dot. Other than that I am tickled with the rifle. It makes a terrific pair with my GP100, uses the same ammo, of course, giving decent firepower in a compact light package. It was to be my "get out of Dodge" combo when I was healthy enough to "get out of Dodge."

And, it is unquestionably California legal, and will likely remain so even if all the gun ban nonsense comes to pass. Of course, I'm heading to Texas as soon as my house sells so it will be hopefully moot.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

That grizzly custom stuff is pretty wicked looking... But I think I'm going to keep it a little more toned down. I may go with the option of a scope later but seeing as how people were using these rifles for livestock protection many moons ago with iron sights.... May be best to leave well enough alone? I don't know? Guess I'll wait and see. I think my main focus will be to add a sling to it. I'm crossing my fingers I can go shoot it next week. And then decide on a trigger job or not.

Nope the Win 94 I bought is the angle eject and not top eject. One of those is going to cost some cash if it's in good shape. Not sure how or if you can scope it. But the Marlins are damn nice looking rifles.

Guys, I've got a confession....

I just abandoned my great State of Texas. Got a opportunity we couldn't pass up and just moved to West Kentucky this past week. So I'm going to have to ask all of you to please watch my home state until I get back. But I've got to admit, West Kentucky is beautiful! Please don't kick me off the forum or consider me a traitor. I'm still a Texan and there will be a Lone Star Flag flying high as soon as I can get a flag pole up.

In the meantime, I'll check out the sites and info you all gave me. I will look into the leather scabbard. Be nice to get one with some detailed leather and TX Star conchos on it. I'm hoping I can find some gems up here and enhance my fire arm collection. I found the 30-30 up here and hopefully I'll find one in .38/357. I really want an older top eject if I can find one for the right price.

BTW.... There's no ammo up here either.... But at least KY is extremely gun friendly and accept my CHL. If anyone knows where to buy a good quality TX flag, please let me know.

What part of West Kentucky are you in? I grew up just across the Mississippi river from Kentucky and spent a lot of time in that part of Kentucky. I can tell you some good places to go for food and gun stuff if you are close to them. And yes, it IS a beautiful part of the state.

Hi Keith B.
I'm living in Murray. Anything you can share as to where to go for shooting, ammo, events.... Please share.

The people here are just as friendly as West Texans where I grew up. I think I'm going to love this place as my second best state.
