But if you weren't already on good terms with the police chief and weren't the former police chief yourself, your actions could draw an undesired response from LEOs in some jurisdictions.
So IMHO before anyone emulates you in a similar situation, they really ought to think it through, and give due consideration to the jurisdiction they live in.
