Brinks Commercials

Am i the only one who thinks these commercials are ridiculous?

Im sure its "possible" that a burglar will get scared and run off after hearing your alarm go off, but the commercials make it seem that you will be so safe with a Brinks system.

The one that gets me is the mom and kids that scurry upstairs after they see someone outside their window.

And the one where the husband takes off for work and acknowledges the jogger guy who promptly breaks the door down when he leaves.

Would you leave?

Anyway, i feel better now :)

I have seen the one with the mom and kids. There was definitely a shotgun missing in the last shot when she says something to the effect that they are safe after she answers the phone.

I find myself writing my own ending for those commercials. That's where the woman is on the phone with the alarm co. guy (ADT is just as bad) who is assuring her that help will be there any second. Meanwhile, the bad guy smashes his way through the door and goes on a Freddy Krueger style killing spree. My stage directions call for all sorts of blood-curdling screams and shouts.

About 10 minutes later, the cops finally show up and survey the carnage. The bad guy is long gone. The alarm guy is still on the phone saying, "Mrs. Smith! Mrs. Smith! Are you OK? Try to stay calm. The police will be there any minute."

Then there's the other version, where when the alarm guy tells her the cops will be there any minute, she says, "Great! But who's got that kind of time? Some guy's breaking my door down NOW!" Then she gathers her daughter into her upstairs bedroom where she locks the door and takes up a position of cover behind a large dresser well off to the side of the door. She draws a S&W 686 from a fanny pack and waits. The bad guy starts pounding on the bedroom door. She yells, "Get out of here! I've got a gun! Get out of here NOW!" Finally he breaks through the door, whereupon she drops him in his tracks with a couple of well placed shots.

Once again, the alarm guy is still on the phone saying, "Mrs. Smith! Mrs. Smith! Are you OK? Try to stay calm. The police will be there any minute."

This time, she answers, "We're OK. Um.... better send an ambulance too."

You're not the only one. Alarms are an important element in a security system, but they're not magic.

I have a Brinks alarm system (came with the house when we bought it). This month, they announced that if the alarm goes off, they will first call the house, then an alternate number (generally the owner's cell phone) before calling the police.

That means Norman Bates's uglier nephew has at least two minutes to do his worst before the call to the police goes out.

In my version she asks them to send a coroner, after we hear/see her reload.

Probably because they are getting more and more charges for false alarms.

I don't know why they're doing it. In my town, the city charges us directly for false alarms. We get one free a year.

Actually, Mas Ayoob gets the credit for this one.

But seriously, calling for an ambulance is direct evidence that your intent was to stop, NOT to kill. Can't hurt in helping the police get things straight during the cleanup.

If you want a good alarm, get one with some type of verified response (Like Sonitrol) this will meet most PD's requirement for a verified response, independant of you, and will get you the best protection.

But of course, it's not cheap.

I responded to many Burglar Alarms as a cop. Only once was property taken when an alarm went off. it was the microwave sitting right by the back door that was kicked open.

The overwhelming majority of bad guys will leave upon hearing the alarm. They don't know if YOU are home and now armed, your neighbor is coming armed or what.

For me, when I am home the alarm is MY warning that I have a problem that I need to handle.
