Wildlife Service sets bear traps, cyanide and poison meat traps near neighborhood subdivisions that accidentally kill hundreds of family pets each year.
This is to protect endangered species from predators.
Maybe this would be something that could be cut from the budget rather than the White House tours.

You common peasants. You and your pets have no business here. Move along. This is fed.gov property.

Double edge sword. If the owners kept thier pets on a leash/in thier yard that would not happen.

Actually in the example illustrated it was civic club property in the neighborhood. The government asked for and received permission from the civic club to place the traps on their property. Of course later they denied knowing that the traps they allowed were not humane. (some of those trusting the government types) And they also failed apparently to notify the neighbors that they had given permission for lethal traps to be located on property frequented by their pets and children.anygunanywhere wrote:You common peasants. Why should a cat be kept in the house. It is not against the law or even against courtesy where I live for cats to roam. We fixed our cat so he is not out making babies in this world. He has his shots. He stays generally in the area. Cats will do as cats do. Some cats are made to be indoor cats and some are not. If we kept our cat inside he would be monumentally unhappy. He hunts, catches things (mostly grasshoppers and spiders), enjoys his life.
Aside from that why are they setting dangerous traps where children could be? That is monumentally stupid and of course if someone got hurt they would claim some sort of govt shield from prosecution. Perhaps if govt officials were as liable as the rest of us they would be more careful.

Feral cats destroy much more wildlife than they eat. Allowing cats to roam free exposes them to disease and death by coyote and other predators. Pets should remain at home. I am not advocating that the fed.gov do the exterminating. There is far more to responsible pet ownership than allowing them to generally stay in the area. I have observed feral cats destroying quail coveys.mamabearCali wrote:suthdj wrote:Nope I would not own a cat, but just the same it can be kept in the house and I know they escape yadda yadda yadda bottom line is when your pet is dead there is only 1 person to blame.JALLEN wrote:Ever kept a cat on a leash? I have also had feral dogs chase deer on my hunting properties.
pets = stay home in house or yard.
pets in the wild = do not belong.

I was given my first cat more than 60 years ago, and have had hundreds of them since, not all at once of course, and I am not at all sure that one "owns" a cat.suthdj wrote:

Like all of God's creatures, they are subject to risks, of nature, weather, other animals, illness, old age, etc. but it requires a deranged and malignant soul to intentionally harm them.

Is your cat out digging up flower beds/gardens so is can crap, is it out. loudly fighting with other cats a 3am so I can't sleep etc..... But yet when you cat dies because somebody left anti-freeze out they are irresponsible, right? As a pet owner you are responible for you animal and all that it does and to the best of my knowledge in TX your pet is to be controlled.mamabearCali wrote:suthdj wrote:Nope I would not own a cat, but just the same it can be kept in the house and I know they escape yadda yadda yadda bottom line is when your pet is dead there is only 1 person to blame.JALLEN wrote:Ever kept a cat on a leash? I'm dog person myself, but come on, "left anti-freeze" out? How do you just leave "anti-freeze" out? I don't know what the law is on anti freeze disposal --just that it's illegal to dispose of it in landfills-- but I suspect "just leaving it out" is probably illegal. But aside from that, if you just leave anti freeze "out" how do you know some kid won't get poisoned with it? I'm gonna have to say yeah, just leaving it out is irresponsible, probably illegal, and likely to be for the purpose of poisoning animals.

This is criminal behavior that would land anyone of us who did this on our own property in prison. Just imagine how you'd be pilloried if in doing so you killed or injured a trespasser. You be prosecuted for setting a booby trap.Over the years, Wildlife Services has killed thousands of non-target animals in several states – from pet dogs to protected species – caught in body-gripping conibear traps and leg hold snares, or poisoned by lethal M-44 devices that explode sodium cyanide capsules when triggered by a wild animal – or the snout of a curious family pet.
A management source within the USDA claims Wildlife Services employees are told not to document the accidental killings of pets if it can be avoided.
"They are told to get rid of the leash and bury the dog," said the source, who spoke to FoxNews.com on condition of anonymity.
Another criminal act that would land any of us peons in prison. The source also alleged that in some instances in Arizona, California and Minnesota, the killings of pets are intentional – often with the knowledge, approval and encouragement of upper level Wildlife Services management.
"There have been cases of them shooting and killing dogs," the source said. "They’ll just claim it was feral, vicious or rabid. They think they can do anything they want."
The Feds have prosecuted us mundanes for merely having an Eagle feather in their possession. These criminals break the law with impunity. The Bald Eagle is a scavenger bird, so of course if it flies down to investigate a carcass that is placed near a leg hold trap, it will get caught in it," he said. If the trap is not checked in a timely manner, the eagle is left to die. Such deaths are a violation of federal law, like the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, first passed in 1940.
