I don't have any children yet, but that seems pretty young to leave them home alone.

That being said if I ever have a child in the same situation I only hope that they react the same way.

Obviously, she isn't just any regular 11 year old girl. For a girl to have realized the situation and to get the shotgun, then to actually fire it TWICE.....she is a mature girl with a good head on her shoulders.

Most 11 year olds would have probably hid under a bed or in a closet with their favorite teddy bear/doll.

I think she will be OK mentally. For her to get the shotgun was a big step alone. Then to fired it point blank and blew some dudes insides everywhere....thats HUGE!.

Right there I probably would have expected her to scream, drop the shotgun, and freak out. But no, she took aim and hit the 2nd illegal in the arm.

That is all mind right there. She saw the situation and executed it with two kills.

It's true that anyone, especially a young person, will need help dealing with a fatal shooting. But the fact that she had the training and skill to respond appropriately to an armed home invasion is pretty good evidence that she has such a support system in place.

I was with you right up until that last sentence. I doubt she'll ever dehumanize the invaders to the point that she calls them "beaners", and I definitely don't think she'll ever minimize the seriousness of her actions to the point that she says she "blew (them) to Kingdom-come!"

I believe this to be a fictional event. There is nothing at all in the media reagrding this, nothing in the local papers in Montana, (From the time it supposedly happened in November of last year until today) and the only thing on the web are chat boards and blogs which all reference this one article. Also, there is nothing on the NRA site even though this is supposed to be from the NRA files according to the liberty.org site.

I would chalk this one up to an urban legend that may be based upon a true event that happened in another city. I know as gun owners and people who do support self-defense we like to hear about positive stories of people using their firearms to proect themselves, but we don' need to fabricate stories in order to do that. There are more than enough real stories on the civilian gun defense blog (complete with references) to support our case without having to resort to fabrication.

I do see your point and I do own an explanation to clarify. While in undergrad, one of my three minors was psychology and child psychology had the hotter chicks.....so I went that route.

One thing I remembered learning was that children will mainly do two things with a drama. One, bottle it up and it changes them. Two, they make a joke out of it to express their feelings and to help them remember it wasn't fault, or nothing else could have been done, ect.

I don't know exactly how this girl will handle it, but my guess is that was mature enough to handle the situation with precision - so I would expect her to make a joke out it.

That is where parents would need to help her understand that there was no other way.

I probably should have explained that earlier....as what I said in the last sentence could be taken the other way and offensive to others. I do apologize for that!

Obviously she waas guarding herself and the house, and quite well at that.

My older daughter could have been trusted to be home alone at 11, my younger daughter could not, and my son would have been like "What house?"

OTOH, by the time my older daughter was 16 we couldn't trust her home alone if we didn't have control of her boyfriend.
