Safe recommendations?

Post by Vol Texan »

I'm looking to buy a couple of safes - one for my home (gun safe), and one for my wife's jewelry store. The home one will probably serve dual-purpose for when she brings work home. For that reason, we're not limiting ourselves to just those advertised as 'gun safes'.

Her insurance company has recommended that she get a TL-30 safe, at a minimum, for the store, so we'll probably keep that as a bottom threshold for both safes.

A visit to a local (Houston) safe shop yesterday had her looking at a TL-30 x 6 safe (enhanced protection on all six sides, rather than just the front).

We're both newbies at this, so we're looking for advice or recommendations. Does anyone on here specialize in this, or have some good information you'd like to share?
Your best option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
When those fail, aim for center mass.

Here are untold numbers of reports and topics on safes.

most folks, surprisingly enough...LOL... Recommend the one they chose for themselves.

If that isn't enough info, there is a special topic just for the purpose of safe research. I'm not sure why it is ignored so often as it has everything and anything that one would ever want to know about safes.

Gun safes have been discussed several times on the forum. Do a search and you should find several threads with good information. It depends on what you want to spend. The sky is the limit. I would do quite a bit of reading first to narrow down your choices. You can spend a lot and still not have a good safe, but the more theft resistant ones are going to cost some money. It is well worth it if what you have to lose is worth a lot more, though. The best economy safes I have found are the Winchester's at Tractor Supply. Good features for the money. Putting high value things in a safe is obviously an "all the eggs in one basket" problem. A thief knows it has something he wants. Our strategy was to buy multiple safes and bolt them down to the floor rather than one really large one. A thief likely does not have time to break into multiple safes so the chances of losing everything is reduced. That is only a theory, though. Haven't had it tested yet :biggrinjester:

The OP isnt looking for a "gun safe", which is classified as a "Residential security container". They do not meet any of the requirements for a real safe, so they can all be ignored here. In this instance, if dealing with jewelry for a business, he will probably have to maintain a certain level to qualify for insurance coverage on the items, so it is a good idea to have a similar level at home.

Only recommendation I have is to call around, and dont be afraid of looking out of your area. A good TL30 or higher safe will set you back a pretty nice chunk of change, but will be worth it considering what you plan on storing. Shipping may not be a killer if you find a good used one out of your area.

Keep in mind that you may want to talk to a foundation specialist about putting that much weight in a single area in your home on the slab, and if not on a slab, be very careful. Having 2000lbs or more on a 2x3 area can cause some problems.

Dont be afraid of finding a used place either. This is the place I went to shop http://www.agunsafe.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, and this is his used safe page: http://www.agunsafe.com/Used-High-Security-Safes.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . At the very least, you can compare prices.

I have also heard good things about Frank Zykan.

Good luck

I'll +1 the Frank Zykan suggestion. I've talked with Frank a few times via another forum and he is a great resource. He knows his stuff and will point you in the right direction. He usually has good recommendations as to local folks you can contact as well.
