Open Carry Event - Houston - July 4th

Post by locke_n_load »

Because of the successful open carry march in Temple, other towns are starting up open carry marches. I'm in Houston, so I found out that there is an open carry event scheduled for July 4th from 9-11 a.m. Downtown. They just started this group so I'm sure there are more details to follow, and hopefully a webpage for those who don't have facebook.

group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/175381245962424/

event: https://www.facebook.com/events/131795557021997/

You can also search for "Come & Take It Houston" in Facebook and it should come up.

EDIT: If you don't have facebook, you can go here:http://www.dontcomply.com/come-and-take-it-america/
and click on the event for Houston.

It should be noted for those not familiar with these that it is an open carry for LONG GUNS ONLY as open carrying a handgun in Texas will get you arrested.

True. And when carrying a long gun, the method of carrying "should not cause alarm", meaning it needs to be on a sling, probably on your back. People who plan to participate (myself included) should read up on long gun open carry in Texas before going to the event.

I'm in DFW and Houston is a bit of a hike - if there was one in DFW I would be in no problem. Perhaps the DFW forum members can start one?

Same for me. I would love to participate in a DFW event like this.

Check out the dontcomply website in the OP. I do see that there is an event in Dallas. You can also email murdoch@dontcomply.com for info, I bet that there will be a group starting up for DFW soon...

I have to say I'm somewhat skeptical of this group. While I support their views on gun control, I don't agree with their broader agenda as it pertains to GMO, 9/11, Occupy, and vaccinations. Their philosphy seems to be largely anti-goverment and anti-corporation.

Too Many of these may lead to prohibition not Open Carry by CHL's..
I Might show up to show support in DFW but my personal carry gun will stay Concealed!

I tend to agree. Look what happened in CA when people pushed the issue. First they protested the unloaded carry of handguns and lost that (no more open carry at all). Then they pushed the issue with long guns and lost that too (no more open carry of long guns). I just hope this does not backfire here too.

I doubt it will lead to prohibition, but these things do NOTHING to advance the open carry cause, and a LOT to make it seem undesirable to the average Texan.

If they wanted to get legislative support, they need to build up from reasons why they NEED open carry (which would NOT be "because I want it" or "because other states have it"). So far, the arguments have been weak and ineffective at the legislative level, and seems that situation will remain so for, oh, ever.

I don't get the point of these things. It doesn't seem like a good way to win friends through the cause. Most of my friends are pro gun yet would find participating in it as strange. I doubt they are alone. How much more do we alienate those on the fence...I'm sure most will choose to sling an AR. Even worse IMHO.

From the Come and Take It Houston FB page from Ben Gruita:

GREAT NEWS!!! By GREAT NEWS I Mean Let's get this party started type of news..... I just spoke to the Sargent that is in charge of downtown. We will a have a Sargent walking with us and a unit very close by. Some of you may think that is because they want to intimidate us. That can't be further from the truth. This guy is super pro 2nd amendment and wants to make sure ANYONE wanting to open carry a long gun feels comfortable in doing so and WILL NOT be harassed by the police. You can have your barrel pointing down or up. Your choice as long as it's not pointing forward at anyone. You can carry ANY rifle, shotgun or long gun. The officers with us are simply there to make sure that any 911 calls from uninformed individuals are quickly resolved. They are also there to step in should a patrol unit decide to question any of us as to why we are carrying and in case any liberal wants to get in our face about the guns. I have worked with HPD in the past on many events and they are big supporters of guns and right to bear arms. At the event we will do a breach check and ask that we carry our weapons without a round in the chamber. I'd hate for anyone to trip and accidentally have a weapon go off or some nutcase think it's funny to pull the trigger on one the weapon on someone's back.

We are doing all we can to ensure that EVERYONE who wants to carry is able to do so without the fear of being arrested of OC a long gun. My goal is to have a very peaceful and successful first event that will serve as a template for our monthly events. So come on down and have a great time!!! July 4th from 9-11.
