My mom used to make me take a bath in bleach water to kill them. After 15mins of being in the bath it looked like coffee grains were floating on the surface.

I like this ideal.

Carl, I MAY have to disagree with you and suthdj. I say may have to only because it may work if put on the outside of long pants. Do not put directly on skin if wearing shorts.

We do not even put them on our dogs. If a dog collar has enough toxins to kill the fleas on a dog, IMHO, thats too much. And just imagine if those toxins were on you. It will get into your bloodstream. I only say this because there are those that may try it on bare ankles (I've seen it before).
True not against the skin, this was a method we used at Ft Polk when we were in the field. Top of the boots.

Prevent = dust well with sulfur powder
Chigger bumps = dab with a small dot of fingernail polish

Old remedies that work.

Clear polish for the men please. But yes these are what mom did to us and as I recall, worked pretty well.

And Ed4032, you owe me a monitor cleaner. I just sprayed coffee all over it.

Gotta agree with Sulphur powder and fingernail polish.

If you get some of the fingernail polish on sensitive membrane tissue, it will be a memorable experience.

Once you have them, campho-phenique on the bites...

To prevent, I've never found much that's 100% but use lots of bug spray with DEET before you go out. Spray it before you put your pants on and then spray over them too...

My two cents...

I realize that this is not possible in all areas but I have found that mowing reduces the possibility of getting bitten. The area around my pond used to be chigger city. Lately not so much. Mowed regularly.

Shedding a little light on the darkness, eh?

I must not get out much. I haven't had a chigger bite in years.

Here's some useful chigger info: http://oklahomastationsci.org/news/The- ... ggers.html

They like humidity. By keeping the grass short you severely diminish the optimal environment for them. Longer grass stays damp longer and holds moisture better.

We don't get a lot of chiggers down here because they don't like temps much over 90%. Now I used to live in Arkansa and boy did you have chiggers there.
