If my 2 year old saw that and fixated on it, she'd have it in about 2 minutes. She will drag chairs over to where she wants to go and will even use tools to reach things. She's incredibly smart and resourceful as are many children at that age.

A proper quick access safe is important with little ones and even then I'm nervous about leaving guns in them with rounds chambered. Education is so important because children are smarter than a lot of adults think. I've already showed my daughter my guns and have explained they are "No nos" and that she is not to touch them if mommy or daddy is not with her. She's a bit young to fully grasp the concept but the seed has already been planted. Just the other day I was putting my EDC on when she came in the bedroom and said "Daddy, no no!" As she gets older we'll refine the lesson but for now, she understands what I expect.

Don't underestimate kids. Simply don't.

You can get guns safes pretty reasonable. That way you can safe store you gun in the ready condition.

I am in complete agreement with all the previous posters....BAD IDEA. Not only will the kids eventually figure out how to get it, including at night when the parent is asleep, as mentioned before, the possibility of a ND is too great when trying to retrieve it in a hurry.....BAD IDEA...oh wait, I already said that...I'll say it again BAD IDEA.

Tell your friend to consider this: when his child is finally able to barely reach that gun, which end is going to be closer to his grasp? The barrel, or the grip? If he grabs the barrel, pulling it down toward himself, and the peg catches the trigger and pulls it back, is the bullet going to hit his son in the top of the shoulder, the top of his chest, or the top of his skull. Is he willing to live with either of those three results? Will his son live with either of those results?

That is without a doubt the stupidest thing I've ever seen, and it is worth a visit from CPS.

I pray it NEVER happens, but I have images of toddler pushing something over, only able to barely reach, pulling on the muzzle while it remains on the hook - there is a distinct chance it would engage the trigger and the muzzle would NOT be pointed in a safe direction!

The other thing I can envision is trying to get it off the hook in a sleepy panic yourself and having an ND - I don't feel this would be accidental. JMHO.

Yeek. If not for the kid I'd be inclined to say you can't fix stupid. Would she be open to something like the Cornered Cat website? There's a lot of good information on there in general, but safety for kids is one of the topics covered very thoroughly. Maybe if she's reading other articles there and runs across kid safety she would give it more thought?

Barring that, I'd do whatever you can to encourage the kid getting LOTS of training in gun safety. It doesn't sound like you're talking to a receptive audience so I'm not sure how you'd go about that, but if there is anything you can do about it it's probably the best thing you could do for a kid who's going to be growing up (we pray) in a house where guns aren't stored securely.
