CHL90 Question

Post by Capt Roy »

First.. Is everyone going to need to submit the new updated CHL90 this year..

Also, do we need to go ahead and send it in or wait until we renew. On their website it appears to me that you can send it in at any time and your record will be updated, that's assuming we have a record or file..

I've been a NRA instructor for a long time and attended the short course when I went through the instructors course. I gave them a NRA completion cert then.

Thanks
Capt Roy

Yes, everyone has to submit a CHL-90. Do it now and pay the renewal fee so DPS can get the background check started. People who don't do this will not be getting information about the regional renewal classes so they can sign up.

I paid back when they first started this. I sent CHL-90 and NRA Cert by email two months ago and by mail about a month. They still show that they are awaiting receipt of materials. I do not know if they have started background check or not.

You should be fine, based upon what was said during the Instructor Conference. DPS should start sending out class information soon so that will be a good indication. As others have noted in the Instructor Conference threads, DPS is going to offer regional renewal classes. I presume they will only send that information to instructors in that region/area, but that's just a guess.

I suspect they will tell everyone about all renewal classes. Some might want to take that time as a vacation. Visit friends/kids in other areas of TX. Take the wife while I go to class, etc. If not, let's share that info here. :)

They require NRA pistol instructor. The NRA will require you to take Basic Instructor Training too. Most trainers teach both at the same time/weekend.

They may email you BUT you have to have those and the CHL-90 submitted before you can schedule a renewal class.

The classes, especially in the outlying areas, may fill up.

Course, it will not be hard for them to add more classes OR increase the class size because they do not need to worry about ranges.

I have been a CHL instructor since 1995, why should I have to prove I can do what I have been doing successfully for 18 years??? Now I have to fork out several hundred bucks for the sake of bureaucracy!! Surely we would be grandfathered in by now....

It's the law. Does not have to make sense. And no, you are not grandfathered.
