Bellaire: "It can't happen here"

Post by seamusTX »

In Bellaire, a man was jumped and beaten while jogging near Newcastle Street around 10 p.m. Tuesday. He fought back, and the muggers fled without stealing anything. The man had minor injuries.

Bellaire is a town surrounded by the city of Houston. It is a fairly upscale town. It is adjacent to the Galleria and also some sleazy neighborhoods. The Interstate 610 loop and U.S. 59 provide an easy in-out for criminals.

You know, if I were going to mug someone, I wouldn't do it to a guy that is 1). probably young, 2) in shape, 3) probably not carrying alot of stuff to steal. Of course, I'd probably pick the little old lady that was a formal police officer/martial arts instructor, and packing her kimber 1911.

I'm looking out my window at 610 west right now (11 a.m.), and it's moving at the speed limit.

This was at 10 o'clock at night, and traffic seems to be pretty light at that time, even on Bellaire.

Well, the infamous bank robber, Willie Sutton was alleged to answer the question of why he robbed banks with, "That's where the money is." If you live in an "upscale" neighborhood that's the same reason the thugs and toughs frequent your area. Sorry, just a fact of life. Carry always. :tiphat:

Willie Sutton denied having said that, but it sounds so good.

Hopefully the victim in this case will expand his options,

That's why I carry. People always say, "Not here, not me." A friend goes jogging at 5 am unarmed, even without mace. When I was appalled and encouraged her to at least carry mace, I was told that I was paranoid, they live in an upscale Neighborhood. Her hubby even has his CHL. But, once again, I'm "paranoid". I'm also paranoid because I am here learning and trying to improve my skills and confidence. They're worried about me! Seriously?

Because I am a mom, my instincts as mama lion is stronger, nobody will get between me and my kids, and this is what drives me to learn and prepare. I'm seriously getting frustrated with people doubting me. Maybe, they don't have confidence in my ability to carry. I made a 100 on my written exam and missed a perfect score by one point in the shooting portion. To me, I am doing everything a responsible gun owner should do- safety, training, and learning.

The bank robber in Carrolton who ran into a Target, that's why I carry. The list goes on. Geez!!

Sorry for the rant. Whew!
If you carry a gun, people call you paranoid. Nonsense! If you carry a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about?

Pull up the list of registered sex offenders in your neighborhood. It's on the DPS website somewhere. There are sex offenders everywhere.

Maybe where you live the police have a list of arrests available. It's amazing how many arrests occur for things like DWI, public intoxication, possession of a controlled substance, domestic battery, and assault—hundreds per day, or thousands in a city like Houston. The attitude of "It can't happen here" is due only to ignorance.

Not to digress, but why does it seem like women have "friends" who criticize and sabotage them? Someone who treats me that way gets a quick tour of the way out.

I'd like to know the reason also.

Are people more uncomfortable with a lady with a gun or should I be more Tom boyish in order to have gun respect?

I'm going to look up their area and see what crime is going on around their zip code.

I think it's the "head in the sand" syndrome. You have chosen to exercise your rights. That takes energy and commitment. "They" choose not to for whatever reason and decide to try and make themselves feel better by calling you paranoid.

Don't worry about what others think. Decide for yourself what you will do and do it.

My two cents...
Lo que no puede cambiar, tu que debe aguantar.
Take Care.

I don't know. Read Dear Abby or any such advice column. It seems women criticize their "friends" over everything from romantic relationships to child-rearing.

Men are not immune to this, either. I had "friends" telling me not to get married to the lady that I have been with for 37 years now. I think they were just envious. Most of these self-styled geniuses have been divorced at least once, some several times.

Just a pesonal observation.... Most ladies who have a CHL voluntarily are much better shots and more knowledgeable about the law than the men. I say voluntarily because some ladies are pushed into it by their male partners.

Yes, I have a female friend like that too. She went... drum roll... jogging at 8PM in NEW JERSEY by herself and unarmed. She got mugged and I had to bite my tongue and avoid her for a month so that I won't say, "I told you so," to her.

No, they are not envious, but gun shy. They've been shot before and can't comprehend why any man would want to be shot again. They can't comprehend your marital bliss because their marriage ended in disaster, as with most marriages. But you beat the odds. :cheers2: :tiphat: :coolgleamA: :hurry:

This was when my circle of friends were in their 20s. I was the first to get married, but not by much. Most of them were married within a year or two of graduating college.

However, I've noticed that children of divorced couples or parents who stayed in loveless or abusive marriages can be cynical about marriage.

But this is getting off-topic. :rules:
