Comptac CTAC vs. Minotaur MTAC

Post by Bang4Buck »

I'm looking at both of these as options, as I'm hearing good reviews. Their sight doesn't really give a detailed side by side comparison and list pros and cons of one vs. the other. I'm leaning towards the CTAC since it is better for hot climates, and hopefully works fine year around.

Curious if any of you have thoughts on which is better and why? :cheers2:

I owned a comptac CTAC for about a week, and took it back, the kydex is up against skin, the top of it is kinda pointed, and would jab me in the side anytime I sat down (I wear at 3:00). I ended up getting a holster more like the Minotaur, has a leather back on it, which is much more comfortable to me. I also wear an undershirt under my holster all the time, so I never have leather against skin.

If you like the minotaur, there are a dozen companies with a very similar design, crossbreed, white hat, kholster, old faithful, alien gear. Actually just got an alien gear holster in the mail last night, but can't give any feedback for it yet.

I own the MTAC Minotaur. I have not tried the CTAC but as I was deciding, I thought it would be uncomfortable (for the reasons you mention).

I can tell the OP the MTAC is a good holster. The ride and cant adjustments are a big plus as you are trying to decide on what to buy. Having the full backing between you and your weapon will increase comfort.

As JMod45 points out, there are many good IWB holsters out there. I'd make sure you have ride depth and cant adjustment on any you consider.

My two cents.

I'm on my second MTAC for my EDC, and I'm not completely happy with it. The first one I wore with full forward cant. Loved it. Very comfortable, very easy to conceal. However, over time the leather backing deformed so badly that it stuck out creating a lump in my pants. I complained to CompTac, and they told me that the holster wasn't designed to be canted so far forward. If it wasn't designed for that, why did they make it possible to cant it that far? They wouldn't replace the holster, so I ordered a new one. This one is in a neutral position. It's harder to conceal and less comfortable to carry, so I looked for alternatives. I'm currently trying out a TactiPac holster.

IMO, a kydex holster with a leather backing needs to be designed with enough stiffness in the leather so that it won't deform like the MTAC did. I won't be buying another one. I'm still looking for the ideal holster, although i like what I'm seeing from the TactiPac so far. It will be a few months at least before I know if it will meet with my full approval.

The next one I might try will be a Crossbreed, but I don't think it allows cant, which is important to me. Cant makes the pistol much easier to conceal.

I've got an MTAC & what I like about it vs the Crossbreed Supertuck is the leather backing. I've got a friend at 6'1 & 170 that carries a full size 1911 in a Supertuck. He carries most the 1911 90% of the time. The inside of that holster is raw leather (furry side) vs finished/polished leather of the MTAC. Look at the Minotaur Spartan for an idea of what the Supertuck is like too. I think it was also cheaper than the Supertuck.

This is what has me leaning towards MTAC. I like the way these are made you can easily just swap out spare bodies if you want to carry a different gun.

I have two MTAC's and a CTAC. The MTAC is a little more comfortable, but I find the CTAC to be a little easier to adjust to the right spot. With the CTAC, you definitely need to wear an undershirt. The MTAC will take a little while to break in. I have not had a problem with the leather deforming, but I don't carry at the full cant.

I have CTAC's, but no MTAC. I use an Infidel daily and wear my 5" 1911 for many hours and my wife occasionally uses one for her Kimber Ultra Carry. I've never had a problem with the Kydex against my skin. I have a good friend that has the Minotaur version of the Infidel (Infidel Utra and he loves it.

I like the Infidel design better than the CTAC, because it's so easy to put on and take off.

I have CTACs for both the 226 and the P7M8, have used them for years and pretty happy. I can't say they are the most comfortable under all conditions, but bearable. Part of the problem is I take up too much room in my pants.

I placed orders for with another manufacturer of Kydex holsters and after 6 or 8 weeks and lots of e-mails back and forth, cancelled. CTAC has always gotten anything I ordered within a week or less. One of them came almost by return mail!

Try to find a left handed holster for a P7M8 on the rack at a LGS! I'd be surprised if there was one in the entire country.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

And of course, the biggest selling point: switching out kydex bodies! I forgot!

If you are looking at the ability to swap out kydex for different guns, I would recommend looking at Old Faithful, or Alien Gear. Alien Gear will even switch out the kydex with you for free if you change guns. Both of these companies are also about half the cost of an MTAC.

I have no problem with my CTAC.

You can always try putting moleskin on the inside to see if that helps.

It looks like Alien is the same manufacturer as Old Faithful.

I also notice, not one pic of the backside of the holster showing the fuzzy side. ;)

What makes you say that?

I wear an MTAC pretty much every day and don't have any complaints. Then again, I almost always wear an undershirt as well, even in summer.... It is pretty comfortable for me, and hasn't deformed in any way, but everyone's body type is different.
