Beaumont police detectives are investigating an attempted aggravated robbery in the 3600 block of East Lucas that left one man dead. The call came in shortly after 9 pm Tuesday evening. Investigators say three men attempted to rob a game room clerk. The owner then grabbed his handgun and exchanged gunfire with the three men. Investigators say after the exchange of gunfire, the three men fled on foot. "The sound of the gunfire was like an echo. It sounded like it was coming from the inside of the building," Lionel Johnson said. "I ducked back in my apartment because I didn't know if the bullets were coming this way or not." Officers arrived on scene and found one of the three men dead near the game room. Investigators say he appeared to have been struck by a bullet during the exchange of bullets. The game room clerk was not injured during the robbery attempt.
