WTB: Gun for my old man.

Hello ladies and gents,

My father is starting to get back into the gun hobby. WOO! But he says that he needs a simple gun to take apart and clean. So basically any modern model of firearm with a "take down lever". He has a revolver and a browning 380, but he says he wants something with a higher caliber. (Also he needs a slide that looser to rack back, his Browning is super tough!).... I'm thinking, next step 9mm. Oh did I mention he's 70 years young?

I need suggestions of reliable 9mm, simple to take apart, straight forward firearms for my pops. OR if anyone is selling a gun let me know! I'm looking in the $400 range.

So far i'm thinking in brands/models:

Springfield XD/XDM 9mm
Glock 17/19
FN 9mm

Can't go wrong with a Glock 19. A member of my family that is 70 years young rocks a Glock 19 almost everyday and has no issue with manipulating the slide. It's also incredibly easy to disassemble.

70 ain't old. I'd suggest a Sig P238. He can rack it. If he was in the army as a kid, he' ll remember how to carry it. He might even show you, if you ask nice. Kiddo.

My Walther PPS is VERY easy to take down. I even showed a dude who was selling them at a gun show how to do it. And I'm a girl! With not real strong hands. It's easy to rack too.

Beretta 92FS.

If he is 70, he wont be impressed with Tupperware. I do not like that you have to pull the trigger on a Glock to take it apart.

Easy to take down, simple to clean, heavy enough to control recoil, and very fun to shoot. It also has a de-cocking lever/safety.

S&W SD9VE, inexpensive ($300 +/-), simple breakdown, accurate and reliable - trigger about 8 lb.. Taurus PT92AF (similar to Beretta 92) is another good choice, but locking block makes takedown a PITA at times. On sale now at Academy for about $350 (ends today). The 92 is a great shooter. If you're in the SATX area, I have Sigma SW9VE and SW40VE (replaced by SD series - 10-12 Lb. trigger) I'm looking to sell, just haven't bothered posting here as yet. I'm almost 72, arthritic hands and, knock on wood, no problem jacking slide on any of my semi-auto's which range from small frame to very large frame. Your "old man's" MMV. Good luck on your search.

I’ve never been a fan of Glocks either but have a variety of other hand guns. Out of all them the H&K’s followed by the Beretta’s are by far the easiest to break down. However you’re more likely to find a used Beretta closer to $400 than an H&K.

That's on GA... Local used prices for an XD should be around 400 however on the XDM you are probably correct more like 550 to 650 since they are newer... Should have dropped the XDM from my reply ;)

Hmm...I've actually never shot a 92FS...surprisingly actually since it's such a popular gun, and since I own quite a few various arms. Oh right...I remember why. It's cuz my small"er" hands could never reach the safety with my thumb so I never rent it to try it. My pops shouldn't have a problem though. I'll take him to the range to try that one out as well!

Actually, I found my subcompact XDM 9mm for $480 at a gun show. lol. But this was back in 2010. I haven't found one that low anywhere nowadays. I should have bought 2.

Sig P250, can be found new for under $400.00. Easy to break down and clean and the slide is easy to manipulate...

Bud's has police trade in M&P 9mm's with night sights that have gotten good reviews so they're probably not too worn out. I think they were listed at $389 including shipping. I also have an old S&W 915 that's still great to shoot. Full sized steel frame that's pretty easy to take down. They are still available from time to time on Gunbroker. I got mine for just over $300 and it was in great shape although I realize that it's all a matter of timing. Good luck with the hunt and let us know what you decide on.
