A woman was killed while under police custody after being arrested for public intoxication. She was being transported to jail when the police car she was being transported in was t boned by another drunk woman at an intersection. This all happened at 3:30 am. The woman was ejected from the car. HPD policy is to have occupants seat belted. That is being investigated.

So much for the theory that if your drunk you are more likely to survive a car accident. RIP.

Drunk or not, if not seat belted in and ejected, your chances of survival go WAY down. I have a good friend that said in 30+ years of being with the highway patrol he only had one fatality on the scene wearing a seatbelt. He had more ejection fatalities than he could remember.

Just the other night I had some time with a local officer (ride along) one of the folks we transported was very drunk, and on the way back to the station he passed out, fallen over and removed himself from the shoulder strap of the seat belt. .. Not a lot one can do at the point they have passed out...far as I can tell.

Getting hit from the side... might very well have caused that person to come out of what was at that point a loose lap belt only.

Another was not cooperating well (passive aggressive / non compliant) The officer i was with did a great job getting him belted in... but made me take pause as I realized he had to put himself in a awkward, very close proximity, mostly defenseless position to the detainees head.. leaving him open to biting, spitting or a head butt.
Likely? Probable not... Deadly if it happens? Again probable not. but it made me understand even belting in a suspect or detainee has got to be done with caution and forethought.

Sounds like there is an opportunity to design a restraint system that is effective and doesn't put (or minimizes)the officier at risk...hmmmm....think....think....think....maybe like a roller coaster restraint???? If any intrepid souls on our little board designs such I expect at least a hamburger for the idea.

The crooks often undo the seat belt as well, or when you go to seat belt them they start spitting at you ect. which causes you to pull back. Most cars now have the reverse seat belt, but it still is problematic.

That would work. Loop around the neck then connect the other end to the child seat restraint system behind the seat. Bet they sit nice and tall in the seat then. Great for correcting bad posture too.

The girls got prettier after midnight, or used to. That may have been the effects of exposure to night air and strong drink over the years, or something.

Until you get put in the back seat for carrying somewhere that is legal but 30.06 posted anyway...
LEOs have broad discretion with that back seat, that's all I'm sayin... Which is a good reason to always be very polite.

That seems to apply only when the drunk is driving.
