Looking At Ar 15

Post by gguess66 »

Ok so I am looking to buy an AR15 soon. I think I have found the one, The Windham SRC or O.R.C or the MPC A4 AR 15, the one at Cabelas. I am planning to put some sort or sight or red dot on it. Would like anything thoughts or opinions I have also thought about the Colt LE6920 or an M&P, but for the money I heard Windhams are good AR 15. :txflag: DONT TREAD ON ME! :txflag:

Colt LE6920 with an Aimpoint T-1 micro would be my first choice for an all around gun.

i have a Windham. it was cheap yet i feel it was built better than the price i paid for it. it is the SRC model. it also has a composite upper and lower. it shoots straight it doesn't get hot due to the double layered hand grip and most importantly it will eat any ammo i send down it. Brass and steel 223 or 5.56 it doesn't matter. It also has a lifetime guarantee. I am a fan of it so far. i get gunsnobbed by my gun snob friends because i paid 700 dollars for it but it shoots just as well and hits the target as well as there Colts and every other variety.

Depends how much you want to spend, and how much you will actually be shooting. I have a Bushmaster I bought just before the panic. I just bought it to have in my collection, and I just fell in love with it. AR's are great fun to shoot. Get the one you are thinking of, you can always upgrade later on (but you may not need to).

I saw DPMS on the link - I would say no. Might work fine for others. For my first AR I would get one that has proper testing and construction before branching out.

I was looking at this Core 15 AR at GT Distributors.

I believe there is a GT store in Dallas.

Thankfully prices have come back to earth as far as entry level options on the AR front go. I think Bud's has the CORE now for $650 w/free shipping but I don't know much about them other than most people think they are good for the $$. I like the M&P a lot but they are not as easy to find on sale. Check Gunbroker. I've seen new ones go in the $650 range there and I have had great luck buying from sellers on the site. CDNN has also had some great deals lately but they usually only last a few days so it's best to get on their email list. Let us know what you decide on and good luck.

DPMS hasn't done me wrong, at least not so far. I have found mine at least doesn't like steel cased ammo; when a shell got stuck, the extractor ripped a chunk out of the extraction groove. No damage to the rifle, but I had to use a cleaning rod to poke the shell back out. Aside from that one mishap (and I no longer shoot Wolf :biggrinjester: ), no failures, no hiccups. It shoots about as well as the Colt work issued me, and the trigger's even comparable.

On the "down" side, it's no-frills, and the trigger feels like dragging a (very small) piano down a dirt road. But then, so does the Colt's trigger. On the plus side, these are both rectifiable situations; I haven't "fixed" the trigger on my work rifle because it's not technically mine, and they "frown" on modifications, and I kept my personal rifle's trigger the same because I can use it just fine as-is. It's not a match rifle, putting every round through the exact same hole, and it never will be, but it's more accurate than I am, and it works.

I know lots of folks like to poke at them, and I'm sure there's a reason for it, but I've not seen it.

My first was a Colt. I've loved it from the day I bought it. I love it even more with the little things I've done to it.

I bought a DPMS in the height of the panic. Because the guy selling it wasn't going on panic prices. I bought the rifle, a few little things like brass catchers and other nick knacks and 1200 rounds for less than 100 rounds of ammo alone at the time. I wasn't sure of what to expect from it. But It's turned out to be a pretty nice rifle. I replaced the standard furniture with a pink set of furniture for my daughter to shoot. The trigger was actually smoother than the Colt's stock trigger. It's not as nice as my Geissele trigger that I replaced the Colt's trigger with though.

I think my next one will be one I build from the ground up. Probably an AR10.

Sure you have. Ammo preference is a deal breaker for me for a working gun, but like I said, they work the intended purposes of others.

To be safe:

Check to see if your barrel or bolt are vetted via HPT and MPI like a quality TDP/mil spec gun.

Also check the staking on the carrier key and castle nut.

It is pretty simple.

There are work guns, and plinker guns. Work guns are built to a certain standard (mil-spec, or better), and plinking guns are not. This is not to say a plinking gun wont work every time for your needs, but they are not the same quality.

It is worth the extra $100-200 bucks to get a "work" gun rather thank a plinker, IMO, but that is for each person to decide. For gigag04, its probably mandatory, at least as a duty weapon. For a recreational shooter, it is probably not. That is for you to determine, but the "the DPMS/Bushmaster/RRA/DTI/NFA/Windham are as good as a Colt/LMT/DD/BCM/Noveske" stuff is incorrect. It may be "as good as" for you, but there is a difference in quality, materials, and QC.

There are some "better" budget options, like the S&W sport, Colt 6900, and a few others. Palmetto State and Spikes are also available at a reasonable price, and offer quality guns. IIRC, both are at least batch tested to TDP standards, but I am not sure if they are true mil-spec, but you can regularly find both complete uppers at ~$500, and lowers are easy to find right now. Of course, there is no "warranty" in that case, beyond individual companies - so choose carefully.

Exactly. Even though I'm not full time LE anymore, my reserve journey is almost complete as I've been signed off on by the power that be. Even if I carry it once a month on duty, any rifle I use would have to be GTG.

That's a great deal. . . if that was available in 2008 when I bought my RRA, it's probably what I'd have. . . especially with the 1:7 barrel.
