Visit Zermatt, an amazing city that is only accessible via cogwheel train (and the closest city to the Matterhorn). It's kinda touristy (for obvious reasons) but a beautiful place to visit.

Switzerland is chock full of beauty, but VERY expensive to visit.

Buying Guns
To purchase a firearm in a commercial shop, one needs to have a Waffenerwerbsschein (weapon acquisition permit). A permit allows the purchase of three firearms. Everyone over the age of 18 who is not psychiatrically disqualified (such as having had a history of endangering his own life or the lives of others) or identified as posing security problems, and who has a clean criminal record (requires a Criminal Records Bureau check) can request such a permit.

Carrying guns
To carry a loaded firearm in public or outdoors (and for an individual who is a member of the militia carrying a firearm other than his Army-issue personal weapons off-duty), a person must have a Waffentragbewilligung (gun carrying permit), which in most cases is issued only to private citizens working in occupations such as security.
It is, however, quite common to see a person serving military service to be en route with his rifle.

Conditions for getting a Carrying Permit
There are three conditions:
1. Fulfilling the conditions for buying a permit (see section above)
2. Stating plausibly the need to carry firearms to protect oneself, other people, or real property from a specified danger
3. Passing an examination proving both weapon handling skills and knowledge regarding lawful use of the weapon
The carrying permit remains valid for a term of five years (unless otherwise surrendered or revoked), and applies only to the type of firearm for which the permit was issued. Additional constraints may be invoked to modify any specific permit. Neither hunters nor game wardens require a carrying permit.

Assuming it is accurate, Switzerland is a fairly restricted country as least far as self defense is concerned. Also, who would want to be restricted to 3 firearms!

I will be closer to Lucerne, southern side of Lake Lucerne, about three hours from Zermatt (half way across Switzerland!) May try to make it over if we have time. I try to avoid the touristy areas, but since much of the natural beauty is often the most touristy areas it makes it difficult to skip. Thanks for the tip.

It's funny, the whole country is less than two times the size of the DFW Metroplex, it boggles my mind. You can fit over 16 Switzerlands into one Texas. Zurich to Paris is less than half the distance of El Paso to Houston. The scale of Europe is completely different than here.

Money will be an issue, still have a kid in college so that takes most of my spending money. The flight, hotel, meals, and transportation are all paid, so that's a start...

Switzerland has a 0.7 homicide rate, ranking it 17th safest in the world compared to USA rate at 4.7. Of course collection data will vary from country to country, but I really don't expect any problems. Being unarmed means being in condition "bright yellow" for me anyway.

Go and check out the Czech Republic's laws regarding firearms. Certainly nowhere near as good as ours, but better than Canada. In Czech, self-defense with firearms is allowed, with justification, of course. But still, its something. For a European nation, I'm almost impressed.
