I'm not a fan of the big city, but you do have to give Houston credit. Housing is still affordable, crime is lower than most big cities, and there are a LOT of companies headquartered here.
While a lot of these companies are indeed chemical, refining, or shipping, (especially the top list of Fortune 500 companies) you see many others are on the list as well.

Add in 4 state universities, 3 community colleges, 5 private universities, 3 law schools (OK, that's probably too many law schools
Magpul would do well to locate here and benefit from the lower transportation costs out of the Houston ports.

Depends on who you ask. North Central Texas would definitely be near Leander (which is pretty much the geographic center of Texas). Agreed. Greater DFW is a natural fit if all you're looking for is airport access.
