Texas Musician Steven Fromholz dies in Hunting Accident

Gun was being transferred from one vehicle to another when it fell from its case not being fully zippered at the end. It discharged after hitting the ground killing the musician.

Not familiar with hunting rifles, but is this another case of grabbing for the gun as it falls. Do you store rifles in Condition 0 in their case? Seems odd.

I don't load a hunting rifle until I'm hunting. When it goes into the case, I unload it. I don't know who Steven Fromholz is, but he made a tragic and avoidable mistake here.

Well, for one thing... He was Texas' Poet Laureate in 2007, and was a singer, but gained more fame as a songwriter.

Another story about him.

Isn't it unlawful to hunt from a vehicle in Texas?

In general, not unlawful to hunt from vehicle in Tejas on private land. (Migratory birds can be an exception). Obviously not the safest way.

So sad!

He was in Stephen Still's Manassas, wrote the Texas Trilogy (recorded by Lyle Lovett) and wrote I'd Have to be Crazy (recorded by Willie). All great music.

Loaded, chambered, safety off, cocked.

:grumble

We lose far too many people to negligence. I could see a hunting rifle with a very light trigger (or a malfunction) firing when it hits the ground, especially an older model, so it's possible he didn't hit the trigger... but if it was falling away from him and he grabbed the forend, he probably directed the muzzle right at his chest. Ugh.

Until this post, I had not heard of Steven Fromholz. That is my loss.
After reading about some of his life and music I am surprised I hadn't listened to any of it.
At least, it's not to late. I have posted a song in the Songs That Speak To You thread.
