Old Rifles at the Range Today

Post by K.Mooneyham »

Since the weather decided to cooperate, I took my M91/30 Mosin Nagant and my M24/47 Yugoslavian Mauser to the range today. Didn't shoot all that many rounds, but I was satisfied with the performance (for now). I've been cleaning and cleaning the barrel of the MN, trying to get it back to some sort of decent shape, and I think its working. I only shot the two rifles at the 50 yard range. The MN got 2 boxes of 180 grain soft-points through it, one of S&B and the other was Cabela's Herters brand. The Mauser got a box of handloads a friend put together for me, 170 grain round-nose soft-points. I mostly shot the Mauser for comparison and to try out those handloads. The pics I'm attaching are of a group from each of them (the other groups really weren't a lot better or worse). The first one is the Mauser and the second one is the MN. The next time I go, I'm taking the bayonet for the MN and see how it changes point of impact.

I just got a 38 Tula 91/30 Mosin with bayonet. Am interested in seeing your results with the bayonet affixed.

I don't make it to the range as often as I like to but when I go again, I'll make sure I update this post.

Completely understand. Ever since the ammo shortage and high prices, I haven't gone to the range all that much.

That is good shooting. I love the old rifles, but like some of you, I don't get to shoot them much. I enjoy just holding my MN (1939) and wondering what it has seen in its lifetime. If only it could talk. I got a laminated stock one, and even got to go through seven others for the best one, at a Big 5 Sporting Goods. Paid $124 for it on sale. Marvelous investment.
