Mark,
Your underfolder Yugo looks sharp. I would leave it like that, original. BTW, does the flip-up reflective dots work? or are they dim?

I originally put lots of "stuff" on my WASR, but one day I woke up and thought, "this thing doesn't need anything added." So I pulled it all off and put it back to factory stock configuration. Shoots just the same, but I really like the simple lines (however crude they may be in detail) of the AK. I guess to each his own. Thanks for the little wrap though for the underfolder. That stock can make your jaw sore if you use a really firm cheek weld. :???:

It's not so much as slapping 'stuff' on there wherever there is room. I'm looking at creating a more efficient rig for me. For example, the red dot; I'd never used a red dot before and always either used the irons for inside of 200 yards and a decent optic (3-9x) beyond that. This was governed by the fact that I run an FAL, which are moderately accurate at distance. At some point I got an Eotech cheap and popped it atop my AR. That was an eye opener for the inside the 200 yards shots. I can still use the irons, but boy does that red dot make it natural and slick. Fast forward to the AK, which to me is an inside the 200 yard shooter. At least it is to me, therefore I can see the practicality of using a red dot on it.

That being said, I'm looking more at the Trijicon RMR (dual luminated triangle reticle) because of it's simplicity and toughness, which also translates to the AK (also simple and rugged).

Unfortunately, the AK doesn't come with a simple mount, hence the forward rail. I'm not trying to go all mall ninja as it's the only way I can figure to get a red dot on there while still keeping the sights.

Anyways, I don't go to the can without a plan, so me deciding on a setup will take me some time!
Cheers!

I've seen these online, but are they AK model specific? How do those rails for the mount attach to the receiver? How would I know which one would work as it appears my M70AB2 Yugo is a bit different from other AKs?
Cheers!

and a red dot and it is easy on and off and very accurate. Over kill- perhaps but might make a nice gun for hogs.

As I said in my earlier post, do you have an adaptor on the left side of the gun to mount one of these rails? Either yours has it or it doesn't. I hope it's built into your AK as this makes it easy to mount anything you want and easily pops off. If you want to see a picture of the adapter will post for you but it is just in back of the magazine on the left side. K-var sells adaptors to mount on some AKs if yours doesn't have one. They also have detailed pictures of the mount. Love my AK.

The dots are there, but I've not checked to see if they work.
Cheers!

Nope. Nothing there. This is why I'm looking into the top cover rail. That will leave the irons in place, not fuddle with the dust cover, and not interfere with anything else. It's the cleanest solution I can find that really doesn't affect the rifle too much. The Texas tac cover/rail is nice, but it requires the replacement of the top cover, the recoil spring, and the rear sight. Too many changes.
Cheers!

Hey, Andy.

I suppose that I'm not being descriptive enough! I went ahead and ordered the Krebs custom ghost sight because it's really only swapping out the sight base. I'm not changing any springs or anything that affects the actual function of the action or gas system. It also won't affect how the rifle is field stripped or cleaned, so it's minimum impact on the rifle with (I hope) will be maximum results. I just don't like the idea of swapping out moving parts or parts that support those moving parts.
Cheers!

Someone (can't remember who) makes a top cover with a low rail that makes co-witness possible with out looking through a tunnel at the irons. When I mounted any kind of optic on those high rail things I lost any hope of ever having a cheek weld short of taping my pillow to the stock. :leaving

I found this:
http://texasweaponsystems.com/index.html

I don't know much about these guys, except they are in Austin. Looks like a really nice way to get optics on an AK and works of a 47 or 74. $140 from them it looks like. There is a video showing how it works on Youtube. Pretty clever and it solves the cheek weld issue.

I have one of those that attach via the side scope mount. Waste of money because it places any optic so far above the sight line with any kind of cheek weld. The other one is a replacement top cover, but uses two screws at the back to secure it to the receiver. It doesn't really co-witness either. The video of the mount made in Austin looks good. On yours, are you able to sight through the peep sight and have the optics co-witness?

I've ordered the ultimak forward rail. It appears to be as low as the receiver based one. You can clean the gas tube/housing up front with a 20 ga cleaning brush so I don't have any need to remove it. It'll be a while before I pick an optic, but I'm still looking at an RMR. They look very low and small which is perfect for a forward rail.
Cheers!
