S&W 357Mag model 19-5

Got a chance to pick up one and see the prices vary on them a lot. Is their certain yrs that are worth more or what do I need to look for? Not so up to date on wheel guns so just wondering if this is worth $500 (could probably get it for less). It's a 6" in nickel finish I'm guessing, could be chrome I guess maybe. Will have it in hand probably tomorrow.

The earlier pinned barrel models seem to bring a little more. You may already be aware that a steady diet of .357 magnum loads can shorten the life of a Model 19, but if not all editions are vulnerable. I really like the Model 19. I have a 19-4 blued

Thanks will check it out and see tomorrow for barrel model, don't think its ever really been shot much at all. It was a lady's I know dads gun, he bought it new and just basically was for self defense at home. He passed away many years ago and she is needing some cash and offered it to me. I'm willing to bet, knowing him and all, that it probably hasn't even seen a full 50 rounds through it.

I'm no expert, but if the gun is undamaged and has been used as little as you describe, I would see nothing wrong with that price initially. I have read the same thing about some of the K frames do not hold up well to a steady diet of .357 rounds.

It should be stamped with a "N" under the grips if it is a factory nickel finish. If no "N" it's likely a refinish and would diminish the value. Look closely at all the markings, they should be crisp with sharp edges. Check all other edges for evidence of overzealous buffing. With the hammer all the way back, try pushing on it to see if it will drop; not good. Look at the cyl/barrel alignment, cylinder/forcing cone gap, end shake etc. The hammer and trigger are not plated. That's a good thing. If the grips number to the revolver (marked inside grips) that's a plus. I would be hesitant to pay that for a refinish. Factory nickel it seems fair, pending inspection.

got it in hand this morning, looks really clean (pic does no justice). overall really tight gun and is factory nickel, all markings are very crisp/clear. although i really like it will probably end up listing it here shortly after getting some pics of it cause just dont really have the extra cash to buy it, plus would just be more ammo need to get cause dont have any 357 or 38
