Heck, I'd say being the victim of rape should get you to the head of the line. :headscratch

I can't help but believe there is more to the story. Would be interesting to know how long ago this was and if it was even in the state of Texas.

Apply that logic to this scenario. I'm just sayin. Either the person is ignorant or if this person is a man is there some other reason why he wouldn't want her to have a gun? Or is that just a little bit too far out there?

If she wants to make the drive up to the DFW area, we will teach her the CHL class for free.

I'll let y'all know as soon as I get some more background from her. I had a busy day yesterday and didn't see her, and she's working today so I may not get a chance to talk to her until tomorrow. I'd really love to know the whole story, though... or as much of it as I can get.

She's welcome to sit in my course in Boerne for free also. I should be teaching a private class near Lake Travis next month. She's welcome to sit in that one too if she'd like.

On the other hand, the neighbor is speaking to you casually and doesn't want to tell you that when she was 20 she did something that got her a felony conviction that would disqualify her. It might be easier to say she can't get one because of the assault than to fess up to a criminal record that she is now ashamed of. Her story is suspect and it assumes that someone who should know gave her false information. That is also a slim. Subscribe to PublicData and see what turns up.

That's another possibility.

I'm thinking that for whatever reason, this woman wanted to tell you that she had been raped, and since she probably thought it would be weird to just tell you that out of the blue, she took advantage of the conversation and made up the story about CHL denial.

I'm guessing that no matter what you were taking about, she would have managed to insert that tidbit of personal information be it real or imagined.

I don't think she made up the story about being raped; it fits with observable context in her life. And she told me that when we were talking about parenting and the balance between keeping your kids safe and letting them live life. It fit pretty naturally into the conversation (protecting children from sexual predators came up), and I feel like if she'd just wanted to tell me the story she would have done it before now in the two years we've lived next to each other. The CHL part of the conversation came up a little later when we were talking about recent crime in the neighborhood. People have apparently been kicking in doors when they think no one is home, grabbing stuff, and disappearing. I'm concerned (not heavily, but enough to take precautions) that someone will try that when I'm home with the kids, which is why I carry when I'm at home as well as out and about. Thus the CHL conversation.

I finally got to talk to her again today and she said she had just spoken with the instructor a day or two before telling me about it. Apparently it's someone here in Austin who regularly comes into the store where she works. I've asked her if she can get his name for me. I had misunderstood and thought she meant she had tried to take the class years ago. If I understand correctly now, she told him that she was interested in getting her CHL, probably mentioning having been raped as one of her motivations, and he basically told her not to bother. She said a couple of other people she's talked to have told her the same thing I did. Makes me feel better about it, because I thought it was weird and/or tragic if this had happened years ago and she never got correct information. I'll let y'all know when she gets a name for me... whether it's appropriate to post, or just share privately for anyone who's concerned and could maybe do something to set him straight or get the other side of the story.

There are two things in this world that will always be in abundant supply: greed and stupidity. It doesn't surprise me at all that some idiot actually believes such nonsense and told your neighbor something so ridiculous.

I tend not to believe strangers on first blush. Just because someone shops a store and mentions that he is a chl instructor, does not make him a chl instructor. Don't have a clue why someone would make such a false claim, but in my experience I have known people who would lie about darned near anything.
