12 years old. May have been self inflicted. No sanctioned shooting activities at the Boy Scout Camp. No idea where the gun came from.

Boy Scouts are not allowed to have personal weapons at the scout camp.

Every day it is more bad news.

I'm sitting here trying to think of how to respond to this incident, and can't express anything but sorrow for the the young man who died.

As a long-time BSA dad, and the proud father of two Eagle Scouts, I can only say that I wish the young man had chosen to stay alive and stay in the program.

More fodder for the anti-BSA groups and the anti-gun groups.

It would be extremely interesting to know where the handgun came from.
Equality, rightly understood as our founding fathers understood it, leads to liberty and to the emancipation of creative differences; wrongly understood, as it has been so tragically in our time, it leads first to conformity and then to despotism. Barry Goldwater

It's was truly heartbreaking to read this story, how very sad for the family and all who witness this terrible shooting. Was no gun safety ever taught in this troop? When so many camps have firing ranges with bolt action 22's and shotgun shooting it seems to me that basic gun safety should have been taught to the entire troop.

And you assume there wasn't because why? That it would of made a difference because?

Have they determined he took his own life?
According to this article he may have been shot more than once. The wounds are in the chest area, not the head as had been earlier reported.

The deadly shooting of a 12-year-old Boy Scout at a summer camp in San Diego appeared at first to be self-inflicted, but now investigators are interviewing witnesses and examining forensic evidence to determine the cause of death.

Investigators said Monday afternoon that the boy may have been shot more than once in the upper torso, but would not say where the scout was wounded or how many times he was shot. Earlier, police had said the boy had shot himself in the head.
