Famed actor James Garner dies at 86
(CNN) -- James Garner, the understated, wisecracking everyman actor who enjoyed multi-generational success on both the small and big screen, has died. He was 86.

Police, who were called to his residence Saturday night in Los Angeles, say he died of natural causes.
This is sad, although at 86 years old, he lived a long life. Lots of memories...

I loved this:
"What was I qualified to do to make a living? Nothing," he said. "You don't need qualifications as an actor or a politician. And I didn't want to be a politician."
Gotta love that.

I liked James Garner from his Maverick days to Rockford Files and beyond.

If you never got the chance to see him in Murphy's Romance with Sally Field, I recommend it.

He seemed like a genuine man. See TAM's post. I will miss him.

RIP Mr. Garner :tiphat:

I loved Mavrick as a kid. Always tough to do homework when it was on.

Racecar driver in Grand Prix. Leading man with Doris Day in the Thrill of it All, the Scrounger in the Great Escape, comedian cowboy in Support you Local Sheriff, and Private Detective in Rockford Files. Always likeable, no one could replace him.

He was not so easy going in real life. He was a no-nonsense guy; blunt and could be argumentative. He seldom backed down.

He was tight with a buck and twice sued one of the studios who cheated him on royalties a couple of times. His lawsuits blew open a big scam (inflation of production costs that was debited from the bottom line) that was perpetuated on actors for years and to the tune of millions. The studios tried to blackball him but he was such a big box office draw they realized they lost more money!

He stayed away from the Hollywood scene and kept his regular guy attitude and values. One of the most telling and impressive things about him was his longtime marriage to the same lady. He was a quality guy.

I enjoyed many of his shows (favorites were Maverick and Support Your Local Sheriff) but one of his last parts (may have been his last part) was in the "Ultimate Gift". Great way to finish his career. Highly recommend the movie if you have not seen it.

86, eh? Don't like a whole lot, if you say it fast.

He was also a veteran. Served in Korea, wounded twice (once by friendly fire).

He had a varied and interesting upbringing and varied young life before settling on acting. He seemed like a no nonsense type of guy. I read he was wounded twice in Korea, once by friendly fire from a US jet. Two Purple Hearts. I enjoyed just about every thing he acted in. He made a comment about not being qualified for anything, so that left acting and politics and he'd never be a politician, something to that effect any way. RIP

When our favorite childhood actors croak we're reminded our own dirt naps aren't that far off...

James Garner always seemed like a guy I'd like to know.

He was great in every movie or TV show he did. Two I haven't seen mentioned were My Fellow Americans and Space Cowboys. Great films.

As I have a wife who is into the Nicolas Sparks books & movies, the only NS movie I'll watch with her is THE NOTEBOOK.....and only because it had James Garner in it. I often tell her that the movie is better when we fast-forward through the non-JG parts.
