Well I didn't know that.
Neither did I, I always thought it was when the muzzle of the gun was placed up against said object or the distance that a "blank" round could be deadly like in Jon-Erik Hexum's case.

That's called "contact distance" in most gun/LEO/forensic circles.

Point blank range is pretty much what the article indicates. It usually refers to the range at which you can still aim at COM (or other target area) and expect the bullet to strike within your acceptable impact zone on the target. For example, if your acceptable impact zone for a specific shot or activity is a six inch circle, then using any given weapon (caliber, accuracy, etc.), there will be a distance from point A to point B where all shots fired will hit within that 6" circle when you aim at the center.

This varies by target, target zone, and acceptable impact zone. The target could be the neck or behind the front shoulder of an elk, the COM of an enemy soldier at some distance, or the head of a burglar 25 feet away who just took your wife or child hostage. "Point blank range" is a concept with several variables rather than specific distance.
