Re: Texas 20 Most Dangerous Cities
My closest city is not on it. Huntington, Texas. We have a trafic signal (green, yellow, & red, Left turn arrow.) so that makes it a city.
Lufkin, is #3. Not surprized it is in the top 20 @ all but was surprized at #3.
My Dad lived in Paris til he died in '94 & it was pretty rough then.

Some of those cities don't surprise me at all. Others I never would have considered would be ranked that high.

Re: Texas 20 Most Dangerous Cities
Not really a surprise to me, especially since they ripped down the tech ghetto crime has spread out around the city. I will say that Midland or Odessa not even being on the list surprises me, in fact I will go to Lubbock but I avoid Midland/Odessa if at all possible.mojo84 wrote:Lubbock surprises me.
How do you explain a dog named Sauer without first telling the story of a Puppy named Sig?

I too was surprised Midland and Odessa wasn't on there. Didn't realize Lubbock had change like that.

Woohoo! Lancaster! Been here for over 12 years. Never would've thought little old Lancaster would make such a list, but then again it is just south of Dallas and I heard Bonnie and Clyde did Rob a bank here back in the old days.

Re: Texas 20 Most Dangerous Cities
I'm surprised Waco is not listed higher. When I was growing up there in the 80's I remember that Waco had the highest murder rate per capita in the nation.
Re: Texas 20 Most Dangerous Cities
I call hooey. I've lived and worked in a number of those cities that are listed, especially the ones in the Valley. Even if the per 100,000 rates are correct, the conclusion that you have a "1 in 12" chance of being a victim is utter nonsense. In every city crime is concentrated, so if you live in or frequent the high crime areas and are out and about at 3 AM your chance of being a victim will be relatively higher, and if you don't, it will be much much lower. I've never experienced a threatening situation outside of the big cities in Texas...Houston, Dallas/FW, and Dallas isn't even on the list.
Where I live now is not even on the list, but I'm sure I could easily find myself in a dangerous situation if I started roaming the wrong part of town, hanging out at 2 AM, or going to seedy bars. Also, when you look at violent crimes, you see that San Benito has a violent crime rate of 2.83 per 1,0000 and is ranked #14, while Tyler, at 5.4 is ranked #20. The Austin rate is 4.11 per 1,000 and it's ranked #12. Edinburg is ranked #4 and its violent crime rate is only 4.53 per 1,000. It's all demographics and this list grossly oversimplifies reality.

from the article.
I think the property crime is what skews the results. We realize that this topic is inherently controversial in nature and hits close to home. We are aware that there are many different ways to present this data, but when compiling this list we chose to consider not just murder rate, but both violent and property crimes.
