need gunsmith referral - rifles

Post by flechero »

I have a pair of marlin mod 60 22lr rifles that are in need of some real tlc... one needs more than just a cleaning, and the other has not yet been assessed. I would like to use one for shooting with my son, whom these were intended for and to keep the other in [pristine shape] the safe until it is passed to him.

Can any of you recommend a gunsmith who perhaps is more centered on long guns or older/restoration type projects? These are of extreme sentimental value so I'm not concerned with spending more than they are worth, to bring them back to proper condition.

Location not an issue, as I travel most of the state. (except far west texas) Any suggestions are appreciated!!!

Many thanks,
Keith

I can't imagine anyone better than Andrew Macfarlane at http://admgun.com/ in Southlake.

I had him fit my Browning O/U stock. He shortened it, increased the cast (bent the stock), & installed a new recoil pad. The mark of a true craftsman... you can't tell it was ever worked on.

He's a long way from you and the work won't be cheap, but it WILL be done right.

That's actually great, I am in the metroplex visiting family at least once a month. And since you mentioned it, I also have an issue with my o/u that needs to be checked out.

I checked his website and he never mentions semi auto rifles so I'll have to check and see if he'll take them on. I'll call him tomorrow, in the mean time if anyone else has a suggestion I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

He does it all. When I picked up my Browning, I got to handle a brand new Barrett he had on hand.

Bear Creek Firearms in Keller is another one. My son works there, and they work on lots of different kinds of rifles.

I don't know if he's still there but Steve Kemp did gunsmithing through Collector's Firearms in Houston. He's about the absolute crankiest person you could ever meet and a decade ago when I last knew his gunsmithing skills were equal to his crankiness.
It's fine if you disagree. I can't force you to be correct.
