Sick passenger taken off plane in Newark

Post by jmra »

Just flashed on my phone:
Showing symptoms of Ebola - taken off of plane by medical staff in Hazmat suits.

Great, a United flight. Hubs in Chicago and Houston. Between ORD, IAH, EWR were talking about 70+ million annual passengers.
My son asked me to read what I thought was a pretty farfetched(to put it mildly)bit of escapist/jingoist fiction a few years ago, "The Last Centurion" by John Ringo. The book outlined an outbreak of a "Super Flu" that spread world wide due to bureaucratic/governmental mismanagement. Infected sitting in hospital ERs, travelers from hot zones being allowed to travel after answering a few question, lack of information/withholding information from the powers that be, etc. etc. etc.
Are we seeing reality mirror fiction here?

I was concerned about the speed of this action. Culturing to grow bacteria or a virus for identification takes days!
I did some research and found that perhaps the FDA did something right! They have approved on an emergency basis the use of a Reverse Transcription/Polymerase Chain Reaction, RT/PCR, test for Ebola Virus. This test, which was originally designed to aid gene mapping, is able to amplify minute amounts of DNA or RNA for identification(as in cases were the patient hasn't expressed symptoms)in just a few hours.
A Japanese bio-med firm has announced(not approved or in use yet) that they have created a test and protocol for virus identification that takes as little as 45 minutes. This will most likely see use in West Africa for early patient identification.
Gotta love Science!
