Just so you know, when police practice getting sprayed, it is for two reasons. First is so that they know they can continue to fight through the spray. Second is because there is a very high probability that they will get sprayed BY SOMEONE ELSE when they are fighting with a suspect.
It is very common to have one officer spray when he arrives and sees two or three others already grappling with a suspect. There is a very good chance of one of the officers catching at least a side spray (which is how we practice when I run the training).
Since this is much smaller for a citizen who is not trying to arrest - just defend - I don't see a need for your wife or you to be sprayed.

As a side note, the percentage of OC makes no difference in how "hot" the OC is. That is a factor of Scoville Heat Units (SHU). Most US OC is in the 2,000,00- 5,000,000 SHU range.
You can also buy an inert model for testing stream distance, spray pattern, etc.

never seen that either, but i can certainly see how it would be a good idea.txinvestigator wrote:Maybe some do, but I have never seen that.seamusTX wrote:When the police drill with pepper spray, they have an ambulance standing by. - Jim
When we got CS certified back in the day the nearest thing we had to first aid was a water hose WAY across the field.
heh, the wife actually told me a pretty funny story last night about how she got gassed once cause a friend of hers was playing around with the CS on her keychain and accidentally sprayed in the car. Can you imagine getting that stuff in your car?
i guess she knows what she's dealing with already to some degree.
Talked to an MP supervisor buddy of mine posted in Bagdad right now. He said he sprays and tasers his folks both in the same day once every two months, but he's a sadist and in a different situation.
If you do decide to spray her for some reason (I wouldn't, me and a deputy friend of my dad's when I was a kid were cleaning up the store room at the sheriffs department and sprayed a green can to see what it was. I thought the deputy was going to get fired becouse everyone had to evac till it cleared, even the dispatcher had to pull the MIC on a cord out in the hall....
) ) but if you do, can you have someone tape it? I think that would probably be really funny. Just have someone else tape it becouse we wouldn't get a good shot of her chasing you down...

CHAPTER 22. ASSAULTIVE OFFENSES
§ 22.01. ASSAULT. (a) A person commits an offense if the
person:
(1) intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly causes
bodily injury to another, including the person's spouse;
(2) intentionally or knowingly threatens another with
imminent bodily injury, including the person's spouse; or
(3) intentionally or knowingly causes physical
contact with another when the person knows or should reasonably
believe that the other will regard the contact as offensive or
provocative.
(b) An offense under Subsection (a)(1) is a Class A
misdemeanor, except that the offense is a felony of the third degree
if the offense is committed.
Not sure if this applies here, but I would think about having a release or something similar signed before spraying her.Just to CYA

yeah, i'd be more worried about dying at her hands than assault charges.
I think we're
(been waiting for an excuse to use that)
She doesn't want to, i dont really want to spray her either, it was an idea born from good intentions and security in mind. I certainly wouldn't do it without her permission anyway. That should go without saying.
Don't think i could really bring myself to do it no matter what the case, even if she wanted. Now, if she would let me pay for her to go to a certification course, i'd be ok with that.

Um, I gotta go now...
In the Marine Corps, we had pepper spray training. We all got to stand around for the lecture, practice spraying with dummy canisters and then watch as the biggest and baddest idiot in the platoon got to charge the instructor and get sprayed. Man, that was hilarious. Tough gun hit the ground in a hurry and the rest of us moved about 50 yards upwind to avoid the residual spray.
For the safety of our young Marine, we had a garden hose, a first aid kit and a phone if an ambulance was needed. He was fine after bathing in a hose and drinking a six pack.
Feel free to spray your wife. I just hope that you do all of the cooking in your house and/or have a girlfriend.
