Smoke bomb in a cafe
just watched a news story on Fox News about a person who climbed out of a subway grill in New York City and tossed a smoke bomb into a sidewalk café.... being in New York City aside.... what would your reaction if you were sitting in that café and saw that someone was about ready to throw "something" into where your sitting...
mine would be to try and stop him... i.e draw and shoot.... justification.... third party protection

If the object is small enough that you can't tell what it is, can you really assume it is dangerous?

The problem you will have is when you shoot some kid that is throwing a water balloon at his buddy as a joke. Until you can totally asses it is a real threat you are best to duck and cover.

Sage advice. After he throws it, deadly force is not justified in Texas as revenge, even if it was a real threat. We can legally shoot to stop him from throwing another grenade, but not to stop him escaping after the attack.Keith B wrote:The problem you will have is when you shoot some kid that is throwing a water balloon at his buddy as a joke. The German ones in WWII weren't, but then again, I don't think they were called "hand" grenades. Just grenades.suthdj wrote:The size of a hand.RetNavy wrote:How small is a hand grenade?MechAg94 wrote:If the object is small enough that you can't tell what it is, can you really assume it is dangerous?
I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

Hand grenades aren't "hand" grenades because they're hand-sized, but because they're thrown by hand (versus rifle grenades, which are launched from a rifle's muzzle.) The Stielhandgranate "potato masher" grenades were hand grenades.C-dub wrote:The German ones in WWII weren't, but then again, I don't think they were called "hand" grenades. Either way, you can't shoot someone because you think they are about to throw some unidentified object. Odds are you won't be able to identify it before it is thrown.

Why all the talk about shooting? Just pick it up and throw it back before it goes off, duh.
