Who keeps track of round counts?

Post by AlaskanInTexas »

Been reading a lot lately on barrel life and similar issues, and I see lots of people who seem to keep very close count of the numbers of rounds fired through their various firearms. Do you do that? I have absolutely no idea how many rounds I have put down most of my firearms. Probably couldn't get within a couple thousand of the accurate number if I guessed.

I don't keep track, but I can do an estimate based on my shooting and purchase history. For specific guns I know roughly the orders of magnitude.

Nope. i figure that most, if not all, of my firearms will outlast me and my heirs. Now, if I made my living based upon extremely accurate placement of rounds (i.e. A sniper or firearms lab rat) it might be different.

Other than just for an interesting discussion point, such data wouldn't be germane to me.

I could have told you up until I passed by 300-400. Then I lost interest in keeping track and didn't see the need. About the only gun I have that I could get close to a reasonably accurate estimate would be my Garand. I've probably only fired 100 rounds though it and enjoyed every one of them. I was going to say all of them except for the very first shot because I forgot to put my hearing protection on, but, while it was tremendously loud and slightly painful, it still put a big grin on my face.

When I get a new gun, I know exactly how many rounds are fired through it for a while.
I always mean to keep a written record . . . but I'll just save the empty boxes until I get around to that. . . . Then eventually the boxes get cleaned out and thrown away so I only know approximately how many I've put through it.
