That's because it's basically a Steyr clone according to one gun dealer who specializes in sale to law enforcement. Not 100 %, but S&W may have borrowed heavily from the .40 Steyr. They just got over the Sigma lawsuit with Glock. Maybe it's worth it.

Not sure about that, I owned both, unfortunatly Steyr does not offer a .45 otherwise I'd own one. The triggers are diferent, the ergonomics are different; Are you speaking of internaly? Steyr looks like a futuristic space gun.

These are the kind of numbers that make me take notice with new pistols and consider them for purchase. Thanks for posting this, Steve.

I've not really heard anything bad about the M&P myself. I've fondled those that belonged to several friends and put may be 2000 rounds through various samples since the gun hit the market. All have functioned perfectly for the few rounds I put through them and I really can't say anything bad about them at all. I suppose I could whine about the trigger but that's an issue of personal preference rather than a design problem.

I have the .45 and I love it, 500 rounds and neary a hickup. Accurate to boot. I enjoy shooting it more than my Kimber UC or most of my pistols. Recommend it, mine has been great. Mine is the non mag diconect and no safety.

I was curious, the M&P 45 feels "really" lite for it's caliber, how is the recoil?

No bad at all, my trigger fingertip hurts after 100 plus rounds but I'm used to 1911 style triggers. The trigger is getting smoother. To me the .45 round has been managable in all 3 platforms that I have shot (3" kimber, M&P full size and my 5" springfield 1911A1). While the .40 has been hit and miss with the USPc (bad) and Steyr( good). So I am biased towards .45.

Even with the longer trigger its very accurate, you would think with all that pull compared to a shorter trigger it would be more prone to amplify your shakes and bad form. But its ergonomic and its more fun to shoot everytime I go.

I have had a full-sized M&P 9mm since February and I have been very pleased with the fit, function and accuracy and has been a good replacement for my XD. I'm still experimenting to determine which of the backstraps gives me the best results.

The only problem that I had was some non-factory ammuntion failed to extract upon firing, requiring a range rod to punch the empty cartridge case out. I abandoned that product as fast as possible! Since that fateful decision, the pistol has eaten several thousand rounds with out fail (FMJ: WWB, Monarch, Blazer brass, Blazer aluminum, UMC, Federal, American). (HP: Federal Tactical, Speer Gold Dot, Remington Golden Saber, Corbon DPX).

My wife has had the compact 9mm since late March and, as long as she uses a firm grip (she's working on her one-hand skills) the pistol eats all rounds. When she's not looking , I take her compact out to the range and I think I may have to get one for myself. We had heard about the trigger jobs by Dan Burwell and tried Donnna's M&P 40. Much, much better! We sent both pistols to Dan and, now, we are shooting much more consistently.

I read up on the M&P a lot and haven't seen much bad other then some earlier units. I will have one very soon hopefully before the 14th.

My full sized M & P 40 caliber and my M & P 9mm compact have been perfect. Couldn't ask for a more reliable gun. Very accurate with a life time warranty in case you should need it. I've put about 2500 rounds through the 40 caliber and about 1000 rounds through the compact. These guns have only been on the market about 1 1/2 years and have a very fast growing fan base.

Ditto !!! Bought my second M&P 9mm at the Houston gun show Saturday for $399, a compact version this time. Took it to the range today and it performed flawlessly. Shooter needs work, however.

I shoot the full sized better, but it doesn't conceal as well in the hollow between my fat pads, thus the purchase of the compact.

BTW, if you buy one, don't forget to send off for your free range bag and the two free mags, both from S&W. (Takes separate coupons/mailings.)

Drifter; I'm jealous! I bought my MP 9mm compact at the Bullet Trap Gun Range for $499.00 + tax as soon as they got one in (12/10/06). Got to shoot it on the spot, right out of the box, after checking the barrel for obstructions. Also got the range bag (that makes five) but bought it too soon to get in on the magazine offer.
My little compact is very accurate, almost as accurate as my fullsized 40 caliber. Great shooting little gun!

Stevie, Regarding the slide release, mine will fall if I insert the magazine sharply but I have no problem normally.

Donna depends on hers to fall when the magazine is inserted.

I have seen "auto slide fall" on Glocks, 1911s, Steyrs and M&Ps. As long as you follow rules two and three, it is not a problem.

The M&P is not a Steyr clone, It has a couple of features similar to the Glock, 1911, Steyr, and HK but the lock work is unique to the gun. It is very different internally from the Steyr.

I'm believing it may just be this particular gun that is a bit sensitive in that particular function...

Everything else is pretty good about that pistol...I like the balance that its easy to stay on target, or re-aquire for any followup shots because of the way it fits in the hand and how well the recoil is dispersed to allow you to be able to stay on target a bit better than some other manufacturers...

To be brutally honest, my SigPro feels way to high in the hand whan I shoot, and I might be on the verge of selling that to put into a fund to switch to this very pistol...

Sure I could trade the Sig in on another Glock, maybe even a G22, but Glocks are a known factor with me, and the M&P's are just something I've been looking at for a while...

Don't be to jealous, that's exactly what I paid for my full sized 9 in Feb 2007 at Carter's Country. A few weeks later they had a "New Low Price" of $520. Figure that out!

Shortly after I got mine, I saw people were buying them for $100 less on a regular basis in other areas or over the Internet. Now Carter's wants $560. Gander Mt has them for about $520 and I got a quote in Tomball for $470. Several vendors at the gun show were selling the M&P's for $400 to $420. Most show vendors charge a 3%+ markup if you use a credit card, so bring a check or cash.

I debated a bit about buying a gun at the show, but with S&W's great service rep, I figured I had nothing to lose. I spend enough $$ supporting local merchants for other purchases that the $170 savings appeased my conscience.

For a $400 purchase, 3% is $12.
For $420, it's $12.60.
A Credit Card may not be too bad of a markup, if that's what you have to do.
