New Motorola Earmuffs

Post by Abraham »

Model MHP71 Talkabout Electronic Ear Protection.

Anyone here use these?

Apparently, they're great for the range

They're discussed in the Feb. issue of "Guns and Ammo" magazine.

They've got some nice features, one of which is being the ability to attach an MP3 player, but still stop gunshot noise up to 21 decibels. Priced at $70.00.

All that being said, I'm currently using Howard Leight Impact Sport electronic ear muffs. And they're fine if shooting pistols, but are a giant pain when shooting an AR. They bang into the stock which is very uncomfortable/ungainly.

The Motorola have a lower profile design, according to the article, that leads me to believe they won't get in the way nearly as much as the Howard Leight ear muffs when shooting an AR. Maybe...

Anyone here use them?

If so, do they work well when shooting an AR?

Thanks!

P.S. The Howard Leight also have a input jack for an MP3 player, but if you try to use it when operating a riding mower, the motor noise drowns out whatever you mean care to listen to. For me, it's audio books.

For now, I cram ear buds in my ear and place an old fashioned set of ear muffs over them and voila, I can listen to my audio books while mowing, but after awhile my ears start to hurt. Not good.

I wonder if the Motorola are better for listening to an MP3 player in this regard?

Looking at this picture, they don't look to have a lower profile.

Also, they have a NRR of 21. The Howard Leights have a NRR of 22. Effectively no difference there.

Thanks Pawpaw,

Currently, when shooting an AR I'm using the Peltor Shotgunner earmuffs, but of course I then lose the ability to hear much of anything as I also slip in a pair of custom ear plugs, thus doubling my ear protection.

I've gotten used to having the ability to hear using electronic ear muffs, even with the plugs crammed into my ears, but that was all pistol shooting. But, man, the H.L. earmuffs are much to bulky for AR shooting.

Obviously, I was hoping to find electronic earmuffs that are much more adaptable to use when AR shooting, not to mention muffs that I could actually hear audio books when mowing with my MP3 player. I have a 23 hp Kawasaki motor on my zero turn mower and that baby is so LOUD it overpowers the audiobook volume!

I use a set of Peltor Tactical PRO ear protectors, but they are not the low profile kind. However, they are very protective of my ears and have a NRR rating of 26. They also can amplify sound while still attenuating sharp loud noises like gunshots. I even wear mine hunting because I can hear what's happening out there better than I can without them, and they still protect my ears.

Maybe some day our electronic ear muff mfgs. will snap to the fact we NEED slimmer muff for rifle/shotgun shooting.

Wearing electronic earmuffs the size of half a beer can is a thing that needs updating...

When I was flying I used electronic noise reduction headsets, all quite expensive in the $1,000 range, Boise made them famous. They electronically reduce the noise by generating an off phase sound. I had a set of the Howard Leight mufflers and they did not form an adequate seal for me and were circular filed. Most of my shooting is shotgun and none of the muffler types let me bring a shotgun close enough to my head to get a good sight pattern. I use the molded ear plugs that are custom made and they are very adequate. I sometimes use an inexpensive muffler in combination with the molded plugs when shooting high power rifles. Age has already has taken it's toll on my hearing. I can't afford any more loss.

I have the Howard Leight Sport muffs and they are okay. About the only time use them is when shooting handgun. Even then, most of the time and with everything else I use the foam plugs rated at 33db.
