DPMS Gen 2 Recon

DPMS is making a .308 that is supposed to be totally different from the AR-10. They call it the Generation 2 Recon in .308.

Anyone have experience with this rifle or have one?

Well we have another product under the DPMS brand. This is an AR15 rifle in .308 caliber that has ben reengineered to a great degree with the purpose of not only upgrading the internals but shrinking the size and weight of the .308 to more closely resemble a 5.56 AR.

After having a chance to go hands on with this new model it is indeed very close to an AR15 in size as well as weight. While a 5.56 rifle weighs in at just over 6 pounds empty a .308 weighs in at a bit over 8 pounds. The new DPMS splits the difference at a little over 7 pounds.

seems to be good reviews of the rifle from what I have seen -- only difference really notice is weight, seems it comes in at just over 7 lbs as to older came in just over 8 lbs

Bet that thing kicks and anyone will probably be wishing for that extra 2-3 pounds for the recoil management.

My Ruger American Rifle doesn't kick hard and it only weighs 6.12 lbs. Of course, I had a big honkin piece of glass on it that brought it up to 7.58 lbs.

Similarly, I used to have a Ruger "All Weather" Model 77 MkII in .308 that weight about 6.5 lb without scope, and it wasn't that brutal either. .308 recoils, but it is far from being severe. The primary problem with a small lightweight .308 is getting back on target quickly for a followup shot. "Double taps" with a AR10 are harder than they are with a AR15, but they are not impossible. Just harder. Ditto lightweight .308s. The SCAR 17S weighs 7.9 lb, and it feels even lighter than that because of its balance. But even at 7.9 lb it is still lighter than most AR10s. Once you add the weight of a mount and scope, that new DPMS model will be a pound or two heavier.

I put a Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50mm scope (22.4 oz) with a Bobro Precision Optic 30mm mount (7.5 oz) onto my svelte 7.9 lb SCAR, and now the gun weighs 9.77 lb.....without a magazine. And 20 rounds of 168 grain HPBT plus magazine weighs another 1 lb 12 oz.......now ready to rock the rifle weighs 11.52 lb.

Unless he never adds any kind of optic, by the time he's done setting the rifle up and stuck a full 20 round mag into it, it's going to weigh 3 lb more than it came out of the box weighing.
