It's a known fact that car inspections do not keep bad cars off the roads. It is nothing more than a veiled tax.

Although I like the thought of it happening here, I just don't see it. The state of Texas would stand to lose to much in that tax

Personally I am for the state inspections. Many people do not have the commonsense to replace their tires when they are bald and the inspections force them to do that. Bald tires can be a danger to both the vehicle and other vehicles around them, especially during wet weather. Same with brakes, steering and suspensions. If the inspections were no longer required I am sure the "safety" requirements would still be law so who would enforce them? I thing most LEO's have better things to do than have to look at the tires on a vehicle during a traffic stop. Now, bring the inspection fee's down to $5.00 and I am on board..........

I am for inspections if it would truly keep dangerous cars off the roads. However, it doesn't. The inspection process is pretty weak in the aspect of checking brakes, transmission, etc. The big thing is the emissions inspection fees in the metro areas. Mississippi is full of them

I have noticed signs for tire rental in some cities. I know of people that borrow tires to get inspected.

Yes the inspection program is basically a revenue generation program, not a safety program.

Several decades ago when the inspection craze hit all the states, Indiana (where I lived) went that route as well, but within a few years dropped it as not contributing to safety, only the treasury (and Indiana had a requirement for a balanced state budget too, so losing the revenue was not a small item). I don't believe they ever reinstated it since (altho there is an emission test requirement). There was no noticeable difference before or after in terms of safety.

I moved from Indiana (with no vehicle inspection required) to Oklahoma City in 1982 to report to my first duty station at Tinker AFB. During the base intro/orientation, the guy giving the word on vehicles told us the OK required a vehicle inspection, but there was a service station close by the base that "if you can push it onto the lot" we could get a sticker for $10. Heh. More revenue generation.

Since I was active duty military, I could keep my car registered in Indiana, so I did.

yep....the inspections get beat all the time. I can get an inspection sticker for $60-$100 depending on the garage. I could tow one in with no keys and get a sticker if i were willing to pay a lil extra

I lived a few years in PA about 35 years ago, and I remember having to get car inspections every six months.

That was back in the days (70's) when American cars turned into prodigious rust buckets very quickly, long before the anti-corrosion materials and technologies of today. Drive the snowy salted roads of Erie PA, and rust was definitely an ongoing battle.

What stunk was if you got a rust hole in your car big enough to put a fingertip into it, that would fail inspection. Had to get bodywork performed to pass inspection. Lots of self-applied, look like crap bondo driving around.

The day I moved away from there to a different state, I also remember playing "Thunder Road" at maximum volume on the stereo. After singing along the last two lines of the song as loud, vehemently, as passionately as I possibly could, I stepped out the door, got into the UHaul truck and drove away.

Smog test is waived if vehicle is over 25 years of age.
