Adidas is stitching NFC into its footwear

Post by VMI77 »

Adidas is building near field communications (NFC) into its footwear, apparel and sporting equipment in the hope of triggering over a billion consumer touchpoints it can use to keep talking to people long after they’ve made a purchase.
If there is actually a market for this garbage this country has truly become a nation of idiots.
“We can say to customers you’re at the point where it’s time to get a new pair of shoes. It’s through that ability to understand what they’re doing, the type of runner they are and how often they tap their products that we can start to learn more about how they are being used. We won’t recommend them sweaters if they’re in the south and its warm and we can actually start to be very specific about how we reach them just through content that’s fully available from them and mashed up in real-time.”
Maybe this stuff is all part of an orchestrated campaign to put The Onion out of business.

So, not that I'm buying that brand, but can you "degauss" the shoes with a strong magnet to kill the chip in them? What about a few seconds in a microwave? For every measure, there is a countermeasure.

True, but unless everyone is doing it and there are no alternatives, why bother? I'll just buy from someone else and save the countermeasures for when I run out of alternatives.

Just how long does one microwave a shoe? And does it have to be full-power, or will the defrost setting work? :headscratch

The simplest solution is not to buy them or rent Hertz.

Of course, we can't completey get away from being spied upon, but we can try to limit it where we can...

The problem, and I don't see that Adidas has addressed this, is that if they can track you, the NSA or other agency can track you........and they don't even have to install any infrastructure. All they have to do is insist that Adidas allow a backdoor into their data collection.

I'm so cynical now that if it were to be revealed that part of the reason Adidas decided to do this was because it was all or partially funded by the NSA I wouldn't even be surprised.

I don't know that will work. Just an off-the-cuff idea. Also, as I stated, I won't be buying that brand of shoe. All I am saying is that someone will want those, but won't want to be tracked. Give it enough time, someone will come up with a way to defeat it.
