Open Carry Texas

So, I searched and found some threads on the topic of open carry but none of them answered my questions; hence the new thread.

Now that the TX Senate has approved open carry, it heads off to the house. Since the house is GOP controlled and I haven't heard otherwise, I'm assuming we should see this pass as soon as the next session takes place. From there, Abbott has already publicly stated that he will sign the bill into law should it ever cross his desk.

What are everyone's thoughts on this?

Anyone planning to show off some of their favorite iron or will you guys be concealed regardless?

I'm now looking to replace my 454 casull Raging Bull so when this passes I can carry it on special occasions.

Welcome to Texas politics where all is not as it appears. While on the surface, passage of sb17 through the House should be a slam dunk. But those of us who have been on these sidelines for a while remain cautiously optimistic. The House contains many mechanisms that can kill a bill without actually killing it - namely having to make its way through 2 committees (Homeland Security and the dreaded Calendars). Many a good bill have made it to Calendars only to either never see the light of day again or to get out in just enough time to run out of time.

If this were true, we would have had Campus Carry last legislature. The 98-52 majority only comes directly into play if a bill gets to its third reading and final vote on the House floor. That only happens if the Calendars Committee schedules it for a vote. That reduces the voting pool down to 15 people who were chosen for their loyalty to the Speaker, and are not likely to cross him on a high-profile bill if he doesn't want to see it come to a floor vote. So that brings the pool down to ...one. And that Speaker got his Speaker job through a majority that doesn't exactly correspond to the House floor make-up (i.e. he has support from the Democrats), and he got his legislative post as Representative in a district that includes some powerful interests that are not particularly 2A friendly. He has supported some 2A bills in the past, but Campus Carry was not one of them. What happens to OC remains to be seen.

I don't think it would have made it this far this quick if Abbott wasn't onboard with it.

ok, thanks y'all - the clarification on the process was what I needed... looks like it might not be a slam dunk after all. Never really paid any attention to politics until i started paying taxes for my small businesses so, I'm still learning.

This just popped up on my twitter feed. Says the same as he had already started but I find it interesting the video was produced. I take it he is pretty optimistic it's going to make it to his desk.

Or, he could be trying to make it clear he would have signed it if it doesn't make it to his desk.

Guess I shouldn't try to read to much into it.

I am very happy with the strides made by NRA and TSRA with SB11 and SB17. However when a politician (even one I like very much a voted for) uses "liberty" and "allow" in the same sound bite, he clearly doesn't understand his role in Government or what "liberty" truly means.

Right now, open carry is not allowed. Passing the law will make it allowable. I don't have a problem with his wording. We want people that are focused on liberty then we criticize them for using the term liberty. How can they win? Darned if they do, darned if they don't.

I'm not saying words are not important or it doesn't matter what words one uses. However, here is an example of being overly critical and cynical with regard parsing words from a comment and using them to criticize the speaker or author.
