Congratulations! You'll love shooting it.
That was fast - CMP must be getting caught up.

They sure are purdy, aren't they? Let us know how she shoots when you get her out.
My very first shot from mine will be etched in my memory for the rest of my life, but not for the reason you'd think. As I pulled it out at my club, one of the more seasoned guys was drawn to it and proceeded to tell me all about it and some of the ins and outs or the rifle. We must have talked for 30 minutes before I let off the first round. I thought it was much louder than I expected and then realized I had forgotten to put my hearing protection on. Do not forget your hearing protection!

Re: M1 Garand
My first shot with mine was with hearing protection - muffs + plugs - and the smile that came to my face at the big booom it made must have been priceless... almost broke my face muscles.
I was with a fellow who was my "long gun" mentor at the time. He'd been deer and elk hunting for probably 35 years at that point, with scoped bolt-action rifles.
We were shooting single load / single fire (CMP did not ship clips with Garands then, and I hadn't bought any yet) prone, at 100 yards. He put 4 rounds into a Midway pistol target, in a tiny group, and was absolutely amazed at how well he could shoot that old iron-sighted rifle! I love it!
See if there is a John C. Garand Match anywhere within driving distance of you. You'll have a ball and meet some good folks!

I bought about 25 CLIPS (finally correct term) and about 250 rounds of M1 Garand Ammo before the rifle came in. CMP emailed and said my paperwork was approved 2 weeks ago.

Re: M1 Garand
My first shot with an M1 Garand was without hearing protection (well, a wad of cotton in each ear) but the Navy didn't issue any, so that and each subsequent shot, for years as a Gunner's Mate, was the same, with rifles, pistols, shotguns and 5 inch guns.

Congrats on a fine rifle! I'm green with envy!
When we were on manuevers at the now defunct Ft.Wolters in 1968, I shot expert with an M-1 on their 500 yd. range. I long for one just for nostalgia sake.

Jim, you really know how to hurt a guy. I didn't have hearing protectors as well.

I was the ship's armorer and could choose which Garand I stood shark watch with. That one was slick as snot.joe817 wrote:.jimlongley wrote:BTW, that's one of "my" Garands in my pic.

Also, it took me another 25 years to actually own one of my own. You really had to be there when I showed up to shoot an IDPA 3-gun match with that beast. And of course, being "major" caliber (.30 vs .22) I only had to score two hits per the other guys' three, which meant the more frequent and slightly slower reloads were not an issue. I beat a few of the ARs, but only a couple of the AKs.

Congrats on the new rifle - it's a beauty!
I've wanted one of these for a loooooooong time. My father was a combat engineer in the ETO (D-Day to VE day, Normandy to Central Europe) and I've always wanted a piece of that history. A couple of my uncles had M1's, but I never got to shoot one.
I just received CFO approval to put my CMP order in...
The only fly in the ointment is that we have vacation planned; based on the timeline, if I send in my paperwork right away we may still be out of state when the rifle ships. I'll have to wait to put the order in until right before we leave, or ask CMP if they'll delay shipping until we return.

I purchased my first lot of ammo from Ammo Garand. http://www.ammogarand.com/3006-m2-150gr ... 62150.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Can't find any M1 ammo in San Antonio (so far any way), got to go to Cabala's in Buda. Any other on-line recommendations?
Oh, and congrats on the '44. Mine's a '55.
