.40 Carriers, what Ammo do you use? Both Range and SD?
Looking for a good bulk ammo at a good price that would be good for both Self Defense and Range. A friend suggested to always practice with what you carry which makes some sense to me but others prolly do not agree. Looking for a decent priced .40 500-1000rd bulk ammo.
Thanks,
Ronnie

I've been practicing primarily with Federal American Eagle 180gr FMJ, but I'm thining about switching to the 155gr FMJ load of the same brand to more closely mirror my SD load which is the Speer GoldDot 155gr GDHP. I also shoot a couple of magazines full of the SD ammo every range trip or two.

If you're budget minded as your post suggests, you should find the cheapest ammo that functions reliably for practice so that you will not avoid practice due to cost. On the other hand, don't skimp on carry ammo. You absolutely must fire an amount of your carry ammo to ensure that it functions reliably in your pistol. Many suggest 100 rounds or more.
I carry Winchester Ranger SXT because it functions reliably in my pistol and it is what my local law enforcement agency uses. For practice, I shoot Winchester White Box for economy.

I would like to stay in the 250-300 range for 1000rds for SD and Range. Think it would be easier to just use the same each time. I would be willing to spend like $500 for 1500rds at this point though if I had to go with a mix.GlockenHammer wrote:If you're budget minded as your post suggests, you should find the cheapest ammo that functions reliably for practice so that you will not avoid practice due to cost. Found this but no one seems to have any experience with it Federal Arms".40 S&W Classic, Factory Ammunition, "Hi-Shok" 155 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point"
That's $260 for 1000rds
Anyone have good websites that they've ordered bulk from before?

If that's $250-$300 for 1000 rnds, then try this at $240 for 1000 rounds of what I carry: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=288358KooLLaiD wrote:I would like to stay in the 250-300 range for 1000rds for SD and Range. Yeah, shouldn't this be moved to http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_F ... php?t=8345?

You know, I've tried for the life of me to see if the cheaper practice ammo I use, matches the feel, and accuracy of what I throw thru my carry weapons...
Maybe its just me, and the reason I practice is to work mainly on the mechanics, muscle memory, draw, dry-fire and reloading procedures...With a few failure clearance drills, even though I have never really had one...
I'll load up, but rarely shoot the expensive Self-Defense loads through my .40 Glock or Sig...Those two would be between the Speer Gold Dot, and the RBCD nasty-grams...I'll practice with Remington or PMC FMJ's...
For the .45, I'll use the Federal Hydro-Shock for Self-Defense, and the same FMJ makers for practice...
Just my take on the issue...

Re: .40 Carriers, what Ammo do you use? Both Range and SD?
When I but rather than reload practice ammo, anything from Federal, Remington or Winchester is fine. I personally tend to use 180gr Winchester USA brand (white box ammo) because my local Academy will sell it to me by the case (500rd) for roughly $140.KooLLaiD wrote:Looking for a good bulk ammo at a good price that would be good for both Self Defense and Range. For defense ammo, again, anything from the big three should be OK. I have a supply of Winchester Ranger, Speer Gold Dot and Corbon DPX. I can usually buy Winchester Ranger the cheapest at $23/box (50rd) so that's what I've been buying lately and I tend to stick with the 180gr loads since that's what I usually have in practice.
Ultimately, you need to find out what runs reliably in your gun, comfortable to shoot, is affordable and readily available. Some folks prefer 165gr and lighter loads. Can't really say there is anything wrong with that but since I reload, I tend to stick with the same bullet weight across the board for each caliber.
When you take the time out of your day to beat someone, it has a much longer lasting effect on their demeanor than simply shooting or tazing them.

If just having fun burning up ammo, I usually try to shoot Winchester White Box in bulk packs
Yea, maybe I should have put in a "Just for fun" Ammo and a "Real Range practice" Session ammo and what not :p
Thanks everyone.
Ronnie,
The least expensive 40 S&W is probably Blazer Brass at Wal-Mart for $7.57/50. We use it for practice. Check out http://www.ammoman.com he sells Speer GoldDots for $289/1000 rds. It's bulk packed loose in boxes of 250. From what I heard it is old ammo from law enforcement agencies. But it is brand new and always goes bang! You could buy one brand new box of 20 for your carry ammo if you wanted to but I would trust the bulk pack stuff. You can't beat the BB at WW for price on brass cased ammo.
PS, I beleive it doesn't make any difference what you practice with as long as you practice!! Also carry the premium self defence ammo of your choice and don't skimp on cost or quality in that area. FWIW, We carry Speer GoldDots or Cor-Bon.
Regards, OE

Appreciate it. I had never heard of Cor-bon until a few days ago and it seems it's all good stuff and people switching to it. Gonna definitely look into it.OverEasy wrote:Ronnie,

I have been using Remington UMC for target but I'm going to be replacing that with Blazer Brass. They both get your gun pretty nasty but I'm gonna clean 'em anyway so I might just as well save a buck where I can.
for defense I'm currently using the 180gr Golden Sabers.
