Bringing long gun Ohio to Texas - by air

Post by Teamless »

I will be in Ohio end of May.
there is a family owned rifle up there and I want to bring it back to Texas finally

I will be flying up and back from Ohio.

Are there any legal issues with bringing a gun I own from Ohio to Texas, that I will need to deal with as the airport?
Or is it as simple as having a hard sided case, with lock, and checking it at the airport and picking it up on this end?

The key issue is who owns the gun right now, you or someone else?

If the gun is "family owned", for example a grandparent or parent, then an interstate transfer of ownership must go through an FFL to you before you can take ownership. The exception would be if the owner has passed away and you were bequeathed the firearm -- no FFL needed there.

If you already owned the gun when you lived there but simply never got around to moving it to Texas, then you are already the owner and no FFL required.

Flying on the plane is no problem. Assuring proper transfer of ownership -- if applicable -- is the problem.

As far as flying goes, simply check the bag in your luggage in a locked case (preferably a TSA-approved lock). Check the airlines you will be using for their instructions as each airline varies slightly in their procedure.

This is the case.

Is there a need for any legal documentation or just follow airlines rules for flying a weapon?

Since it's a bequeathed long gun, there are no legal doc required. You just have to pack it in a travel approved lockable case and declare it with the airline when you check in.

Look at the airline's website for info on transporting firearms, or call them and ask how you need to do it.
