Probably not. I think the per capita number of CHL holders in both places is less than the state average, and significantly less than in urban areas like Houston. I don't remember the numbers for Goliad and Victoria counties, but last time I checked the rate was 1 CHL for every 100 people in Lavaca county.

CHL maybe, but what about long guns? I bet those outnumber citizens.

Oh, I'd guess the percentage of people with rifles and shotguns is very high. I don't know anyone around here who doesn't own a gun. There is an unusually high number of CHLs among my coworkers but aside from that I've only met one that doesn't own a gun. One of my coworkers who isn't even into guns has several at home....some inherited, some he's keeping from a BIL who is overseas. Out where I live in the country hardly a day goes by I don't hear someone shooting.

That means a few of our troops get a few weeks away from being in a foreign country where there are large groups of terrorists trying everyday to kill them. Mmmm...you're not really home if your family is in South Carolina and you're out in the brush in Texas. And siblings, children, and grand-children aren't usually deployed to combat areas. There is no draft. The mothers and fathers who are deployed volunteered. Even back in the day, no one put a gun to my head and made me join the military. I joined because I wanted to, knowing what that meant and what the potential consequences are. Frankly, I don't see the point of joining, say, the Marines, if you don't want to go where there are large groups of terrorists or other enemies trying to kill you everyday.

From 08'-09' I worked in a building in BAAMC that housed wounded military men. Most of them were very young and I know were siblings and grand children. Alot of them were too young to really understand the consequences of what they were getting into when they chose to fight. In the early years of adulthood most men think they are invincible. With that way of thinking, someone can never really understand the dangers. They figure if they die so what, but many survived, with horrible injuries. Just because young men join the marines to go and fight, doesn't mean we should always have them doing that. A few weeks at "home", in the US, is much better than having them do these exercises in the middle east.

I agree that most young men joining the military don't fully understand what they're getting into, but that's true of a lot of things young men get themselves into. Our society and culture generally glorify war and mostly for the purpose of luring young men into combat. I certainly didn't understand what I was getting into and in the ignorance of youth I responded to the glorification. I don't buy most of it now, but even then, I understood, at least in the abstract, that death or horrible injury was a possibility. But yes, they shouldn't always be fighting. I think a very small number of honorable young men are being exploited in bearing the burden for the entire country.

I've seen some V-22 Osprey's low level pass my property, and it caused me alarm. I just found out about this stuff, and local media here in San Antonio is taking off with it. Must say I find it odd, and I don't like what they are doing with this operation. I might go make a tin-foil cowboy hat now.

My wife and daughter were driving through Navasota this past weekend and texted me to let me know where they were. The auto-correct changed it to Naval tactics. I thought she had run into Jade Helm and texted back, "Thanks Jade Helm." That confused her until she noticed what her text had been changed to. We got a good little chuckle out of that. They did not see anything related to JH during their travels.
